Warning to all of you-it just happened to me

Im not sure if this is so, but I did hear that there was a recall on that drug, heprin? May want to check it out. They gave it to me too, left a huge bruise on me, I mean huge, bigger than a grapefruit. And looked awlful. But, after my surgery, I heard there was a recall. Maybe I am wrong. But worth looking into, they said it wasnt working and was giving people clots, and death. Thanks for the heads up. People on here should be aware.

Yes, what you heard is correct. That recall affects one distributor only, which is Baxter, and it is from one of their production facilities in China. The big scare was from earlier this year as no steps were put in place to monitor output activity and health and safety regulations from 2004 until January of 2008, which is why the recall was such a huge deal. From what I've read the risk is significantly reduced now, but definitely something to keep an eye on, especially if your Heparin or LMWH (low molecular weight Heparin) is a Baxter product.

The bruising is completely normal with Heparin and LMWH shots. I had six HUGE bruises all over my abdomen and it looked like someone beat me up. However, the concern with the recall is that it has been tied to anaphylactic reactions, which can be very dangerous. Anytime you start a new prescription and you have any kind of reaction that does not seem normal to you (even if it is in the literature that accompanies the prescription) definitely get it checked out by the doctor. Better safe than sorry, and hey, that's what they get paid for!

And just to cover my ass, I'm not a doctor, nurse or medical professional. I just unfortunately have DVT that almost killed me and I know entirely too much about this stuff.. hehe But that said, if you have questions, especially if you are symptomatic, always always see your doctor. :Angel_anim:

This was something my DR was ultra super duper paranoid about. I decided to get the filter put in just as a precaution. I figured hell I was going into debt, a little extra dough to help prevent something was well worth the expense. I also did the 18 days of Lovenox shots too. And the old lady stockings...they were great for swelling, which I still have issues with.:confused2:

Thanks to all of you who have responded to my post. I wish I had know a little more about this before hand. I hope this will help future banders.

Wanda...thanks for posting...glad you were on top of things....

I had surgery (hysterectomy) last year in June and went home with Lovenox shots...

After band surgery I know I was given 3 heparin shots but that was it....

I walked a ton and avoided the gas pains and hopefully anything else...

What worries me is that they told us in our pre op class that you are at risk for clots up to 3 months after surgery!!! So, I guess I need to follow the advise to keep moving and no crossing the legs...like that isn't even comfortable for my tree trunks anyway...LOL

Good Luck everyone! Shelley

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
