Recommended Posts

HI guys

Well i had my surgery last Thursday (Its Sunday now) so thats 3.5 days..

Im ok, just a little sore at the port site and get sore standing up for long

periods...

Things im not sure about are -

Im not really drinking much as im not thirsty. I had a milk drink tonight and could only drink about 100mls before i was uncomfortable!!

It takes me an hour to drink a small V8 box. Is this normal?

I try to sip Powerade all day to keep me hydrated.

I havent tried anything but, Powerade, up and go drinks, and V8.

Im scared to drink to much - is this normal?

My Dr has instructed 4 weeks clear, 4 weeks mushy... AGH!!!

Nic

7_5_142.gifCongrats on your surgery! Make sure you are drinking Water also..Be careful so you don't get dehydrated. It is normal to be somewhat un-thirsty. But if this goes on to much longer contact your dr. It took me about 1 1/2 weeks of forcing myself to drink some to start to drink somewhat close to the amount I was supposed to be drinking. Also hot tea is also good to help you along. Good luck on your journey. Keep us posted o.k.

There is no such thing as drinking too much. You should be sipping all day long. I had my surgery on the same day as you. I drink Water, Protein drinks, and juice (very little) all day long. I tried the V8 but it has a lot of sugar so I stay away most of the time. It's suppose to take you a long time to drink, you want to take it slow so you don't get extra air causing gas. You sound like your doing great.

I feel for you on 4 weeks of liquid though... I'm so curious why there is not a standard diet out there and all the doc's do something different.

Hi. I was banded on Monday (it is Thurs today). I am on full liquids, so I am enjoying things like sugar- free pudding and ispure Protein Drink. I am getting a little tired of the Isopure, though. I may just start drinking plain Water, and get my Protein from homemade shakes or something. I stopped taking my prescription pain meds bc it made me very dizzy and slightly nauseated. I am just taking Tylenol now. The gas pains in my left shoulder and neck have kicked in. Wow! What pain! I am taking gas-x and am going to go on a walk outside later this afternoon- so hopefully it will help.

Good luck to everyone!

Clear Liquids for two weeks? That's rough! My doc says two weeks of just liquids (not clear) and it hasn't been that hard. I really haven't been too hungry yet, but I can feel what's coming because when I'm somewhere and can smell good food my stomach starts growling. But I get to start pureed food on Saturday and I'm already planning what I want to eat first!

Bigjedda--Don't worry if you have no appetite at first--it'll get so you won't be hungry but at least you'll be able to tolerate drinking lots of liquid. I actually had to force myself to drink and "eat" the first four days after surgery.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
