Anyone with Anemia or an Ulcer before the band?

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all, I just got my blood work back yesterday and it appears I have slight anemia and an ulcer  . So I am not sure if I will still be able to have the Lap Band. I read somewhere that an ulcer was a contra-indication and it couldn't be done. Does anyone know anything about this?

oh my Dr prescribed me a prevpac which is supposed to treat it and I don't have the surgery scheduled yet.

Just thought I'd ask...

Cheryl

I am anemic, but no ulcers that I know of yet. Anemia shouldn't affect surgery.

I am anemic but I still had the surgery on the 17th. I have been anemic for most of my life.

Not sure of the ulcer. I hope you get it done.

My pre op labs showed anemia, for which I was told to take Iron daily. When I had the surg on may 20, the dr came out and told my husband I had a hernia, that he had to repair, along with pics. I have had acid reflux for years, but since the surg, I haven't had one episode of heartburn, and I sleep alot better, without being awakened from a sound sleep, to standing straight up, coughing up what looks like lung material, I had an issue with aspiration into my lungs. It does seem that alot of people that get the lapband, unknowingly have an ulcer.

Long before I got banned I learned that I was anemic. However, through a well educated doctor I learned that African-American women have a naturally lower Iron count than others. It was suggested that I begin taking over the counter Iron supplements to bring me closer to a 12 by surgery and I did and all was fine.

As far as he ulcer, I am not sure, but I do wish you the best.

Thank y'all for your responses. I am hoping for the best. I took some more tests yesterday to determine if I will just need Iron or if it is the ulcer bleeding causing the anemia. Damn the good Mexican food!! LOL!!

But I am keeping positive and keeping up with my appointments I will know more on my next appt in 2 wks.

Thanks again!!

Cheryl

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
