what should I expect emotionally after my band's fitted?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Ill be having my band surgery on 4th July and have been doing a lot of research on the physical effects of having the band :) .However I'm wondering what to expect emotionally afterwards. I'm expecting to find it hard going thru the liquid/mushy stage but I wonder how I'll cope emotionally.

any advice from anyone would be appreciated, thanks

Hello, first off congratulations on making the decision to change your life for the better!! I myself wondered about the emotional part? Its a big decision. I just had my surgery June 14. I have been doing good, got a little depressed in the hospital, but i think thats cus i just was stuck inside for such a long time. The thing i guess im worried about is the stuff i wont be able to eat now. But someone once told me "nothing taste as good as thin feels" This is something we must stick in our heads and live and learn it! We can do this and it ill be worth it!! Just think of everything that will change for the better after we lose our extra weight!! I cant wait. You will be fine, and if you ever need anything, this website is the best for support! and you can also contact me anytime!! Goodluck and keep in touch!! Godbless!!

Hi all. I felt the same emotional roller coaster the first few days. I was banded on June 6 and made it through my first week! You do have to stay positive and focused on what the long term benefit is... A new healthier you.

The first stages are scary...you have to be creative on the diet and think of new ways to put the foods together. smoothies are great for the liquid/puree diet. Suggest you maybe enter a search on this page for mushy stage and you will find some great recipes. That helped me get through my first week. I also went to Chili's with my family today and had a cup of their chicken Enchilada Soup (mashed the chicken with a fork). So you can have some fun with this stage...just be creative. Best wishes to you.

i'm a pretty pragmatic person and didn't have any emotional aberrations after the procedure at all. (i was my normal self--as abnormal as i am :frown:.)

are you normally "very emotional" with mood swings and such? or are you normally pretty "even-keeled"? you should expect the week or 2 following surgery to be like your normal self, except a little more so.

i would tell you to think about all the different reasons you would do this in the first place. is this a commitment to a life-change for you or are you chasing the next "magic cure?" are you pretty good about following a regimen, but just need a little "can't cheat" helper? Because most anyone on these boards who's had their band for any length of time can tell you that it's hard to cheat the band, but it certainly is possible. if you're not ready to make the life-change, then you might expect to be disappointed or depressed with your results.

if you're ready to make the commitment and you've chosen to get the band because you are ready to be paroled from the prision of your overweight, then you should expect and strive for a gentle and well-deserved sense of accomplishment after you get your band. rest, let yourself heal, follow the doctor's instructions faithfully and LOSE the baggage!

i pray for your motivation and your commitment--

I have only been banded for 8 days but I can offer this:

I have not been hungry yet - amazing thing!

I have enjoyed each diet progression. I am on full liquids now, but planning for mushie food next week.

I had one emotional breakdown and that was at my post-op visit when I learned I had lost 15 pounds. I broke down and cried.

My band is the best thing I ever did for myself. I am looking forward to the coming weeks and months! We are fortunate to have this technology available to us!

I am two week postop and doing well emotionally. The first few days I was okay but had a small breakdown on day 4. I think it was due to the lack of energy, gas pains, etc. It lasted a few hours and then I was fine. Keep your head up. You can do this.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
