PR for training 5k!!! :)

Recommended Posts

FINALLY got below 30 minutes for 5k. Finished my training run last night in 29:38. Started at 6 mph, after I got into my pace, increased to 6.2, then for last 6:38 bumped it up to 6.5. I was so happy to pass 3.1 miles before the timer said 30 minutes. That happiness will be short-lived though, as today is my "kick my ass" day of the week. 15 mile bike ride, followed by a 5k brick. I'll see how much of that I actually end up running versus walking - it's hot out there!! :)

Hey this was very intersting to me.I have ben trying to get my 5k time down below 30 mins for a while. I always end up hitting 32 mins or so on the treadmill. On my Triathlon i hit 33 mins for my 5k. I can run at 6.0 for about 10-12 mins then i have to go about 5.5. I need to work on that 6mph speed.

Good luck!

whosya - you are doing amazing!! Triathalon .... duathalon!! HOLY COW!! Yep - you are still my workout hero :smile2:

Ok - so question on this pace thing. I'm still running - I've found the love for it (or I'm crazy). I'm short - I can do 6.0 for 2-3 min or I can do 6.5 for 1min. That is all out running like someone is trying to kill me. I'm only 5'0" - is there a calculator to find a pace that's comparable to you taller peoples?

Holy Cow you guys! You are all awesome. I love this site. You are all so inspirational. I get so motivated reading what you all are accomplishing.

Hey Wombat, great question. I have the same problem. I'm only 5'4" and my poor legs just can't stretch that far! :smile2: Did yall follow some sort of training schedule or did you just make it up? I'm running every day but really have no idea what I'm doing. Any advice?

My hubby is all torso as well and so are my kiddos. Me - I got 3" between ribs and hip bones - no torso for me. I have NO clue what my inseam is so I guess I'm going to measure and see where I'm at. 26 is my guess but who knows.

LOL! its easier to measure on the treadmill my time. I should do another 5k race and see if i can get below 30min. There is one on July 4th i could do...mmmmmmmmmm..

Its very hard to measure your own inseam i go by pants size. But thanks on the compliment. It was very hard keeping up that pace.

I started at 6.0mph...then 5 mins in 6.2mph ....then at 10 mins i got to 6.5mph and kept it there for the duration. I walked fast for 5 mins to get warmed up before i started the timing.

Nice!! Way to go!! For those of you worrying about stride length in comparison to pace, there is good news...you can stop worrying. The bad news is how the running gurus say to speed up, and they always talk about cadence. It's not how far your legs move; it's how fast they move that makes the difference. I just concentrate on form, landing on the middle of my feet, and keeping my cadence high. Lengthening your stride without keeping cadence is actually counter-productive, as it wastes energy. If you extend your stride, your cadence should never change (that's why elite runners look like they are floating on air). After about 2 months of this, I am starting to actually like running a little...good thing, since I'm planning on doing it for years to come.

thanks scuba!! I live by my cadence :tt2:

I'm an old band geek that loved marching.

So, I time my breathing with 4 steps in and 2 steps to blow out. If I can't breath in that pattern then I start looking like a complete retard trying to get my feet back in alignment with my breathing.

Thanks for all of the info! That's good to know. I now know all of the running I'm doing is paying off. I went to camp with my oldest this weekend and we hiked up an extremely steep trail to the top of a "mountain" (I'm in Texas so anything higher than a hill is considered a mountain here! HA!). I would never have been able to do that a few months ago. My booty was really sore the next day but I made it up just fine.

You guys are all doing so great! Congrats on getting your time below 30 min! I know you feel great about yourself.

Keep up the great work and keep posting as it is very inspirational to those of us just starting out!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
