how long does the surgery take

Recommended Posts

I am not yet banded (friday is my day) but from what I understand...the blanket answer is 30-40 mins however that really depends on you and your surgeon. If you stuck with the pro op diet and really shrunk your liver then it could take as little as 10-15 mins but if your liver is still big or other things then it could take 60 mins. Most people seem to recover well. It seems like the worst part of recovery is the air they pumped into your tummy and the port site incision. overall it seems like people heal well! if you want me to I can update you on my progress during and after surgery ( well what the doc said about during surgery since I will be out.

:biggrin2:I was banded last Thursday. Mine took just under an hour and the doctor also repaired a hiatal hernia. So I would estimate 30 to 45 minutes. I was sore until yesterday. The more you try and get up and walk, the faster you will feel better. Just dont try and do any housework, just worry about yourself at first.

I had my surgery last Wednesday. I was knocked out at 7:15 and the doctor came out to talk to my mom between 9-9:30. The PA had told me it takes about 45 minutes to get everything ready before they make the first cut.

My last 2 surgeries, I always get sick the next day because of the anesthetic, this time I didn't. They had given me a prescription for suppositories for nausea but thankfully I didn't have to use them.

I think mine took about an hour. No complications, just normal. But, I really didn't know how long it took...coulda been 3 minutes--I was completely out of it.

I personally didn't get a lot of gas pain. I had stocked up on the chewable gas medicine and didn't even need it. The worst part for me was getting over the anesthesia. I had THE WORST headache of my life--either the first or second day after surgery. It, honestly, was so bad that I laid in something similar to yoga's downward dog pose (the same, but with my knees down) all day long rocking and whining. It was pretty pathetic, actually. Other than that, the paid was very well managed by the meds (liquid Lortab) and I got through it all pretty quickly.

My doctor recorded in the notes that my surgery was 31 minutes long with no complications and just a band replacement.

45 minutes with hiatal hernia repair. as mentioned above - you're out, so you can't tell. I walked out of the hospital a couple of hours later. recovery was quick, very little pain (some gas and discomfort) for me. different for all...

Anyone doing the pre-diet right now? How is it going? Were you kind of scared to get started although it is a long haul to get to surgery??

I only have to do the Akins diet for 7 days which I started today. My surgery is the 17th. So I am sitting her now eating tuna and a boiled egg. Had my pre-testing done this morning. I only had to do an EKG and blood work so I came out lucky there. Good luck to everybody.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
