I've been on the 2 shakes a day and one diet dinner since last Tuesday and have only lost 3 lbs. Does anyone know how much weight we need to loose during the 2 week pre op diet? I've seen where some have lost 20 lbs in these two weeks and I've only lost 3 in one week urgh....

It all depends on your doc when I am actually on my pre op diet 2 weeks before surgery I wont have to lose anything, just can't gain. But on a calorie intake of 1200-1600 my nutritionist has me on for insurance purposes...I have lost 12 lbs in a month

I had to do 1 week pre-op of shakes w/ lean protein/veggies for dinner. I lost 6 lbs. In the two weeks since my surgery I lost 2lbs, started mushies, and have gained them back. I think alot depends on your starting BMI. Mine was 31.7. I feel like I am one of the only people that has lost such a small amount initially....

It doesnt matter what you actually loose as the pre op shakes are actually to cleanse the liver - to make it easier for surgery Dr's require you to do the shakes to get rid of the fat on your liver so it's easier to do surgery when it comes around to it - obviously loosing any weight is great but don't get bummed just because you only loose a little - overall if you loose fat on your liver that's the best thing overall

yes, what sarah said agrees with what my doc said, specifically that there IS NO WEIGHT LOSS goal for the pre-op diet--it's all about shrinking the liver as much as possible so that it doesn't get in the way during the surgery. the more faithful you are to that pre-op diet, the easier the procedure goes (and the better your recovery!!!) Apparently, when you diet like that, the liver loses weight first :P

My surgeon did not have a pre-surgical weight loss requirement. The purpose of the liquid diet was to shrink the liver for surgery. Weight loss was a nice plus, but not a necessity.

I am on the liquid diet post op and have lost around 17 lbs. in a week and a half. But I think it is much different after the surgery then before.

Good luck to you.

I know it is really hard not to compare yourself to others, but the reality is that the weight you lose pre-op on the shakes is not true weight. The people who lose massive amounts (me included) on the pre-op diet (I am specifically talking about the shake heavy pre-op diet, although I would argue it is probably true on any pre-op diet) are losing Water weight, not fat.

Many of those same people are really upset after the surgery when they stop losing weight or they even gain weight when they go on mushies. They didn't actually lose fat during that time and once they start to eat real food, their body holds on to it, and replaces the Water lost pre-surgery.

You are doing fine. Just stick to the diet, if for no other reason than to prepare you for the diet restrictions you will have post surgery (it does make it much easier to cope with).

Good luck to you :P

I was instructed to lose 10 pounds in 7 days on 4 MediFast drinks a day and one Lean Cuisine. I really doubted I could lose that much weight in 7 days but my doctor assured me I could. Well, I started the diet a couple of days early (my doctor is known to postpone surgery if you don't lose the weight he instructs you to lose) and I struggled with it. At the end of 6 days I still had almost 3 pounds to lose. So, I changed my diet to three MediFast drinks a day and, instead of a Lean Cuisine, I made a low-carb dinner of chicken breast and green Beans, for the last 2 nights. I ended up dropping almost 12 pounds instead of the required 10. I'm convinced giving up the Lean Cuisines and switching to low carb is what helped me.

Some of it is Water weight but wow I feel better getting that off and feeling less bloated. My ankles don't swell like they did before.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
