How to shrink your liver (and increase ST weight loss) – the low-carb, pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the LSD info. I have to start mine immediately due to a earlier surgery date. Of course its right before Thanksgiving; however totally worth it. I'm still trying to figure how to drink at least 64 ounces of Fluid.< /p>

Thanks seattle sweetie, i am assuming you are from seattle area... i live up north in marysville, i am just getting ready to start the process next month to get the lap band... and i have a fatty liver, and was wondering what to do to get it down, i heard that can be a detorent to getting the surgery...

anyway, i am a type 2 diabetic, and have found over the years some great alternatives for low carb foods

1. Hood low carb milk, it has only 3 carbs i believe in it, i have found it at Walmart and fredmeyer (krogers)

2. dannon low carb yogurt approx 6 carbs

3. Franz whole grain bread.. about 12 to 13 net carbs (after Fiber reduction)

4. Smuckers sugar free jelly 5 carbs

5. No sugar added peaches 6 carbs,

6. Jello sugar free Jello 0 carbs

7. Jello sugar free pudding 13 carbs

8. Atkins endulge caramel chew bar about 7 net carbs

also dreamfields Pasta the carbs digest different than other carbs... so they say, but it has worked for me to not spike my blood sugars

:thumbup:Thank you, this was great information. I have my first appointment with the surgeons office on May 26th and they have already told me I will be doing a 2 week liver shrinking diet prior to surgery so this is very helpful.

Thanks for bumping this great post. My local (non-band) dietician was explaining glycogen stores to me and I got lost trying to tell my husband about it. Nice to see it explained so succinctly so I can share it with my dh.

I am a believer in low-carb in general.

This amount of low carb - 20 to 30 grams a day - is VERY low, very restrictive. Great for quick weight loss and has the advantage of appetite suppression too (no carbs means no insulin released and it's proven that insulin is part of what drives appetite).

I recently said that my version of low carb was about 90g a day and someone scoffed and said that's not low carb. But it really is. the USDA recommends 300+ grams a day. Many people eat WAY more than that without realizing it.

I think most people aren't aware of how many carbs they are eating.

I highly recommend a book called Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. It's not a diet book, it's written by a science journalist who researched the science around obesity and heart disease and such. It talks about what we know as fact and how much of what we think of as fact is just theory. It explores alternate theories (low carb being key) and shares information from many, many studies. It's fascinating.

Low carb - SUPER low to quickly see results - can be easily achieved by staying BASIC: eggs and meat. Of course, there are other low-carb foods but if you're doing a short term thing trying to keep ultra-low, just have eggs and meat. Those are effectively no-carb or very low. Once you go beyond that, even in healthy fruits and veggies and add cheeses and dressings, you have to start counting. If you JUST eat meat and eggs, you don't even have anything to count, really. (By the way, when I say meat, I don't mean processed meat.)

Thanks for the info in this thread on the liver-shrinking, though. That was a part I didn't know and needed to know. I appreciate it!

Wow, what amazing information. I was wanting to know if anyone new if a liver detox along with low carb would help shrink the liver any quicker?

I am having my band done next week. I am supposed to start my liquid diet today. So far nothing but liquids but I would rather do lowcarb since I am so familiar with it. I've had great results with it losing lots of weight in the past.

Does it shrink as good or better than the liquid diet though?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
