Just had consultation - its all on!

Recommended Posts

Hi all... well I have just had my first consultation today with the surgeon (Martin Richadson) & clinic co-ordinator (Sally Price) at Dolan Park in Bromsgrove.

Dr Richardson was very nice & very understanding/easy to talk to. He certainly knows his stuff & has lots of involvement in this operation for the NHS aswell as privately.

I didn't really know what to expect & I took my husband with me who was not sold on the idea. The good news is now that he has seen the place, met the surgeon & had the opportunity to ask questions he is now supporting me.

I was worried that I would not be accepted as my BMI is 37.7 & not the required 40. However he informed me the NHS put the 40BMI limit due to cost so because I am private anyone over 35 BMI can be considered because testing shows they are suitable & it can help them.

The surgeon answered all my questions & explained the procedure in full and the aftercare... he also showed me a gastric band which is much smaller than I thought it'd be! I also have a blood condition called Thrombophilla (Factor V Leiden) and we talked at length how there is no evidence that I would be any higher risk than someone without this clotting disorder. He also said that the gastric band procedure is on one of the lowest risk operations, its even lower than a gall bladder removal!

We then met with Sally Price who is an advisor who answered questions about aftercare & diet etc.. she has also had the procedure done 18mths ago & already lost over 7.5 stone! She showed me how small & unnoticable the scars are.

I can't fault the process so far... I am going for the WGA package which is £4950. I am booked for my operation for Sat 12th July so can't wait for my new start & smaller figure!

Hope this helps ease anyone elses anxiety when going for the consultation its nothing to worry about! Dont have sleepless nights like i did!

Yippeee...... i'm so excited!

:wink2:

Hi Sallieanne I have just got back from holiday and am trying to read up on the new posts. I too have my operation with Martin Richardson at Dolan Park . My op is June 20th... I cant wait!! Like you I was concerned about my BMI as its 36 and was pleased to know that he is happy to go ahead with the surgery. He says the band is great for people like us. I am soooo happy to be able to have this chance of getting slim again.. I have been "DIETING" for years on end but getting heavier by the year!! IF I can get this weight off and feel normal again it will be well worth the £5000..... Good luck with your and see you on the losing side

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
