Need to be reassured - please - Pre-Opt diet

Recommended Posts

I have been on my Pre-Opt diet which is the follwoing:

My Pre-Opt 13 day diet (given to me by Dr. Teel) is the following:

3 Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink No Sugar 8 oz skim or 1% milk

2 Healthy Choice (or the like of - Smart Ones etc.) 220 to 300 Calories

2 cups of low Calorie Veggies No Sauce or cheese or anything just Veggies

64 oz a day of Water or zero cal drink

I have stuck to it pretty much not going over 1250 cals a day (My dad was in the hospital for 3 days so I was sitting at the hospital with my mom and had to eat smart at the hospital but I still stayed low cal and healthy) but I have only lost 4 pounds . I have been walking on the treadmill as well. I have read time and time again and even know someone that had no Pre-Opt diet and did just fine.

:) So can someone please just reassure me I'm ok with just 4 pounds down.

the Drs really just don't want you to gain

and the pre op is to shrink the liver..

just get back on and do the best you can and I'm sure you'll do fine..

I've heard of a lot of folks that "cheat" all the way through and they were ok

really up your Protein and keep the carbs as low as you can and get some like protein Water by special K from Walmart

it really helps and you can take it with you..

just buy a 16oz bottle of water

Well not sure why yr Dr. told u to drink the Carnation instant Breakfast because it is high in sugar, carbs, and it only has 5g of protien so in order for you to get 15g of protien u have to drink 3 of them like u said yr doing but at the same time u are consuming 660 calories, 81 carbohydrates, and 57g of sugar... I gave my son this when he was too pickey and would not eat regular food so he would get his calories in some where... that's why u r not loosing the weight because u are taking in too many carbs... u would be better off eating a 1/2 loaf of bread.... u need a protien drink that has less sugar, fewer carbs, and more protien because the protien is what helps to keep u fuller longer...ok i just scrolled up and saw that yr drinking the no sugar kind.. i would still try to find a better protien drink that has more protien in it u are taking in too many carbs...

If you have a costco near you, get the drink called "protein" It has 30 gms of Protein and you will feel a lot better. I also use the Slim Fast Low Carb drink which has 15 gms. of Protrein. Four pounds is good. Just remember that it is four pounds down and not four pounds up. You are doing fine. I was baned April 10 and have lost 30 lbs.

Here is some info from the Carnation Instant Breakfast website. They no have a sugar free product. Here is the info about Protein content when mixed with milk.

1. How much Protein does CARNATION® INSTANT BREAKFAST® have, and why is it important?

Every prepared serving of CARNATION® INSTANT BREAKFAST® has roughly 13 grams of protein, which is twice the protein in one egg. When not mixed with milk, CARNATION® INSTANT BREAKFAST® powder has 5 grams of protein. Protein is an important nutrient, essential for muscle development. It’s present in every cell of your body. And unlike with fat or carbohydrates, your body has no way to store protein, so it’s important to get enough protein every day. An average person needs to consume approximately 9 grams of protein per day for every 20 pounds of body weight. So if you weigh 120 pounds, you need approximately 54 grams of protein every day.

Keep doing what your doctor told you to do. He/she is the expert. A four pound loss sounds pretty normal when taking in this amount of calories. Remember, you should only be losing 1 or 2 pounds per week.

Keep up the good work!

I think it depends on the doctor. My doctor cancels surgery if the patient doesn't lose the pre-op weight he tells us to lose.

I was on four MediFast a day plus one "meal not to exceed 450 calories" and they suggested Lean Cuisine, etc. I did that but in the last few days I still had several pounds left to lose and I was getting into a panic. I gave up the Lean Cuisines and switched to low carb -- chicken breast and green Beans, and lost 2 pounds more than I needed to lose by surgery date.

Losing 1-2 pounds per week is perfect for long term weight loss but pre-op diets are usually meant to lose weight a lot faster to shrink the liver for surgery (at least in my experience). I was instructed to lose 10 pounds in 7 days. It actually took me 9 days.

When ever a Dr. gives order of course we should all follow them, however because everyone is not the same we need to tweek it sometimes.. what may work for 20-of his patients may not work the best for this one... The weight loss she has is good, but considering what she is eating she should be loosing more... i would definately lower the carb. intake.....IMO

I drink a protien drink from Bally's and this is just an example but u do the comparison...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
