Realistically how much can I expect to loose?

Recommended Posts

I am being banded on June 4th. I started my pre-op diet on Friday, May 23rd. My starting weight is 200# and my BMI is 35. Can someone who started at about the same place tell me about what they lost each month for the first few months? I'm hoping to be down 25 or 30 pounds in 3 months but I don't know if that is realistic since my total to loose is 75#.

I really want to set some goals. I want goals that are achieveable and will require exercise and effort for me to achieve. I just don't want to set my goals so high that I can't reach them and feel like a failure. In the same thought, I want my goal to motivate me to stay on track.

Does this sound okay......

May 23 start date... 200#

June 4th band date ~ 3 pound on pre op diet????

July 4th 1 month with band ~ 10 pounds????

August 4th 2 months with band/ 1 month with fill ~ 20 pounds?????

September 4th 3 months with band ~ 25 pounds?????

Please share what you lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

TxJuneBug08

Okay, as I recall . . .

8/3/07 starting preop diet: 222

10/10/07 surgery date: 207

11/29/07 first fill: 193

1/10/08 second fill: 182

2/5/08 four months post op: 169

5/10/08 seven months post op: 158

So I was down 25 lb from my surgery weight 3 months post op, and down 49 lb seven months out.

So your goals are realistic. HOWEVER: don't get caught up in comparing yourself to others. We all have different bodies that react differently to dieting, and your rate of loss may be faster or slower than mine or anyone else's. Don't feel like a failure if you lose slower than someone else. I have found it is better to set mini-goals of a couple pounds rather than setting large goals that set you up for depression and self-recriminations if you don't meet them. Best wishes for a successful life as a bandster!

I GOT BANDED ON 4/23/08 AND WITH THE PRE-OP DIET AND THE NEW BAND I LOST 21 POUNDS. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH YOU WEIGH AND HOW YOUR METABOLISM WORKS. I AM 60 YEARS OLD. I WAS 250LBS AND NOW AM 229LBS. I THINK THATS GREAT FOR ME. I HAVENT BEEN ADJUSTED YET. KEEP TRYING. ITS HARDER THAN IT LOOKS. GOOD LUCK!:rolleyes2::biggrin:

I lost 30lbs the first 3 months, 20lbs the next 3 months, and 15lbs these last 3 months. I am still losing about a pound a week, but now that I'm at a normal BMI it's slowing down a little.

I'm not trying to be a downer. I just wish someone had warned me before my surgery. I had my surgery 2-5-08 and am only down 18 pounds. My BMI was 30 to start. The problem is I can't get my band to work. All the weight has come off from dieting. I go for my 5th fill on the 2nd. I have the realize band at 9cc. It will be great for long term success but so far has been frustrating. I thought I'd be down 40-50 pounds by now. I guess my message is sometimes it takes time to get to your sweet spot or great restriction. I thought I'd wake up and not be hungry or as hungry. I was starving 2 hours out of surgery. I'm trying to remember this is for long term health. But damn I want the weight off!! Good luck and just work with your band it will work eventually. Chrissie

I was banded on 5/15/08 and did not do a pre-op diet. Since banding I've lost 13 pounds but attribute it to the liquid diet. I'm really scared about adding the food. Hopefully my mind and body will get in sync and the weight loss will continue.

I started at a BMI of 35 and have lost 120% of my excess weight, about 90lb.

I think I was down somewhere between 30 and 40 lb easily in the first four months, I lost weight fast at first and then lost a few lb a month thereafter.

Ok when i lost weight the first time way before i ever thought about the lap band i would drop any where from 15-22lbs a month and I excercised 5x a week doing an hour on the elliptical trainer and lifting light weights for my arms, and also did my squats and such.. also doing 150 stomach crunches every other day. along with eating 4-5 small meals through out the day and drinking hella water.. so i'm assuming with the band i will do about the same thing... anything else would be unexceptable for myself...See i know what i am capable of doing and now since i have went thru all of this pain.. i am going balls to the wall baby and im going to get the rest of this crap off of my azz... everybody is diffrent but if u never push yourself u never know what u are capable of doing..... u know if u have given it 100% or not....:D

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
