Metamucil, anyone?

Recommended Posts

I have used Metamucil for a few years to solve a stomach problem.

My surgeon says no because he doesn't want me taking capsules and the liquid is too like glue.

I'm taking Benefiber right now but it doesn't work as well.

Does anyone use Metamucil?

Does anyone use capsules?

My surgeon said maybe to the wafers so I'm going to try them once I'm on full solids. Has anyone used them?

Thanks,

Gwenn

I gave up daily Metamucil last summer, feeling that I no longer needed it (had used it for about a year) and that the gas wasn't worth it.

After surgery in October, I have now found my wonderful Metamucil again! I use the orange powder, just 1/2 teaspoon in 1/2 cup of water--and I down it immediately, so there's no chance of it becoming "like glue". (A friend gave me the capsules, but they're a little big to try to go down).

With the 1/2 cup, it's just enough to regulate the body and not send it into overdrive, if you catch my drift!!:crying:

Metamucil cause the worst gas I've ever had in my life. I double over in pain. I can't imagine anyone using that stuff, but I do struggle daily with "elimination". It's not as productive as it used to be, and it can really make you feel like crap. LOL. Not funny....

So does that mean that benefiber doesnt work as well? I am also wondering how I will get my fiber during my liquid phase. I have some benefiber, but maybe I should buy metamucil....

Benifiber is the recommendation of the LB surgeon. My gastroenterologist prefers Metamucil. They do different things and my needs aren't about going, it's more about other stuff two gross to even tell strangers.

I am trying Benefiber with the gastro's consent, and I'm up to the full dose today.

Thank you for the suggestion about the 1/2 cup at a time. If I don't need the full three a day that would work. I also experimented and found if I stirred it continuously, it didn't clump.

If my problems don't abate....I'm just went to mushies so that may help as well, I'll try to hold on until I can have solids and find out if I can really use the metamucil wafers. Whatever works.

The bowel issue has been my biggest problem. I know everyone's different. I had problems before but originally was told I could take metamucil, so I'm aggravated. I would have had the surgery anyway.

I actually had a pretty good day today. Had fat-free cottage cheese and pulverized chicken with broth and a little sweet potato. That in itself is progress.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
