afraid to give away "fat clothes"????

Recommended Posts

The one thing I think everyone should keep from their "fat days" is their favorite pair of pants so that once you're at goal, you can take a picture of yourself standing in one leg of them!

I had a really hard time getting rid of my "fat clothes" everytime I would get in my closet my friends/family would say "why don't you get rid of those clothes?" I simply replied that I would clean them out when I was ready. It might seem silly but I think they were sort of like security for me. I know that I will NEVER be that size again, but saying goodbye to the old me was harder than I thought. I finally gathered up all my stuff and packed it up for the local thrift store.

Yesterday I got out my summer clothes that have been packed away since before my surgery. I was delighted to have to put each and every pair of shorts, capris, pants, etc. in the goodwill box. Just for fun I put my favorite pair of shorts on and was able to fit both me and my two year old 28 pound godson inside! We took a picture and had a good chuckle, it's so hard to imagine myself being that large. I am off soon to have a healthy lunch "date" with my wonderful mom and to get myself some new smaller summer clothes! What a feeling :tt2:

I am almost 2 years from being banded and I am still scared of throwing away my "fat" clothes... I had a slip last year and I have to have surgery to correct it and now I am still worried about other major things that might go wrong..

I can't seem to throw away my clothes..I like to try them on every once in a while and see how big they are..LOL

Most of my fat clothes went to my sister-in-law...it felt good to get them out of my closet...purchasing smaller clothes was hard...I had no idea what size I was...225/185/130....I had to take several different sizes into the dressing room...what a job. It took me six months to get ride of the "big" clothes, but I am happy to have them out of the house now.

For those of you who have business clothing to give away, but don't want to sell them on ebay or a consignment shop, there is a great organization called Dress for Success that provides business apparel for disadvantaged women who are trying to start careers-- they start by giving them an interview suit (once they have an interview) and then a few additional basic pieces once the women are hired. Their greatest need is for plus-sized clothing. They are totally legit-- I know about them because my husband used to work with the refugee community, and Dress for Success was able to help lots of women with nothing get a nice interview suit and a few separates together.

They also now offer all sorts of support for helping women keep the jobs they get, too.

You can learn more about them at their web site: Home - Dress for Success

Hey, if you're going to give the clothes away anyway, why not give some other women a boost while you're doing it? :wink2:

I'm hoping to be in a position to give away my "fat" clothes soon, and I think it's inspiring to see what you all have achieved!

I just gave 5 pair of pants to my best friend. I had a hard time because I am still scared this isn't real. I am changing how I eat and am exercising and I do believe I will do this and keep it off but every once in a while that little fat voice pops up.

GO AWAY FAT VOICE!!!

Yes, my work does a thing each year for this organization. We set up bins around the company and people bring thier business clothes for them. Great corporation. I donated all my skinnier business clothes last time. Next time I'll get rid of all my bigger ones.

I am going thru this right now.

Do I give them away? Do I keep them? What it I gain the weight back?

I figure I can start giving away the winter big clothes and work my way from there.

I haven't gotten to the point where I need to start getting rid of clothes yet as I am still wearing my clothes but I'm sure that will change in the next 10-20lbs I did however keep one pair of pants that was a bit big when I had surgery (From when I was heavier than I was at surgery date from like 5 years ago) and I took a sharpie and wrote FAT PANTS all over the butt in big BLACK BLOCK letters lol.

Other than that, it's all going to be given away - I WILL NOT fail at this so I will not keep these clothes.

Once we get moved and I start unpacking everything, I am going to get rid of some of my winter stuff. I am having surgery this summer, and here in the south, it won't actually be winter until at least October, so hoping I will be down enough by then to need new ones!

There were some really great stories on this thread regarding our old clothes. I finally got started purging the closet because I am moving in a couple months. Wanted my closet to look neat while trying to sell current home, and want to have lots of room in my new closet! Since I am just beginning my journey, I think I looked at the biggest size as the clothes that got me through when I was really feeling bad about myself. Maybe an emotional attachment there, but I finally did it. It is much easier now. In fact, I am having another purge session today, to get rid of the stuff I just couldn't part with the first time around, but after having tried to wear some of it, I realized I look smaller if I wear smaller clothes. So I am sold now.

I just pulled out some of my clothes that were in storage so now its as though I have a whole new wardrobe and my 2 brand new pairs of size 12 jeans that are so so comfortable!! Anyway, I tried on everything I owned and if it was too big, then out it goes, so 4 bags of clothes went off to buffalo exchange yesterday and I got some money to put aside for newer smaller clothes. I say get rid of the big stuff, you don't need to hang onto clothes that your never going to wear again!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
