I have been considering weight loss surgery since 2002. Since then I have gained more weight, developed diabetes, hypertensoin, restless leg and sadness. i attended a seminar last week and have an appointment with a surgeon on tyesday. I just could not make myself have the gastric bypass so I am very excited about all I've heard about the lap band. I will be seeing the surgeons at the South Carolina Obesity Surgery Center. I am praying they will accept me as a patient for weightloss surgery and that things will move onlong well.

Hi Mary,

You've made the right choice for you and that's all that matters. We all choose the surgery that will suite our lifestyle, right? Congrats on going to the seminar. You've taken the first step toward changing your life for the better. Good luck with your journey.

Hey Kathy,

I saw Dr Givens yesterday. I have to move quickly and get my psych eval done. He told me that since I am a cash patient I can have my surgery whenever I want. That is the only advantage to being a cash patient. He did advise me to write to my congressman about the state employee insurance not covering weight loss surgery. I plan to do just that. I hope you will soon get you insurance approval. Best wishes. Mary

Mary,

I am on the state health plan too, so if it weren't for DH's insurance, I wouldn't be covered either. I was thinking the same thing about writing our Congressmen, but it seems like there should be so much more we could do to help others in our same position who aren't fortunate enough to have other coverage or afford to be self pay. They just dropped the coverage in 2004, but i wonder why?

So I take it everything went well with the psych eval?

Kathy

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
