It it okay to sleep on your side right after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have found that I am comfortable sleeping on my side (more the left than the right), which I began doing the day I came home, which was one day after surgery. Is this safe?

Also, I have a cold and cough, which gives me coughing fits as well as need to blow my nose repeatedly. Can coughing dislodge the port? How about blowing my nose? I hold my stomach when I do both, but am still a bit unsure.

I was just banded March 19 and I was sleeping on my side. It didn't seem to hurt anything, however, on about day 9 or 10 I began to feel like some pulling inside so I called my surgeon's office and was told to try and not lie on my stomach, so I have tried to avoid lying on my side too just in case I was lying on my stomach some at the same time and the pulling sensation went away a few days later. As far as your cough goes, I had that too for about a week after coming home and I finally called the surgeon's office and asked about that too, they told me that I needed to call my regular doctor and tell them about the cough and to let them know I had lapband just done to get something for your cough. The nurse at the surgeon's office said it could dislodge your port. I think mine is ok and your's probably is too, but just letting you know what I was told. I'd call your doctor.

Luckily, I'm not a stomach sleeper, and as as comfortable on my back as I am on my sides. However, I tend to snore like a freight train when I'm on my back!

I couldn't sleep on my side for about 3 days bcause it hurt too much. I guess whatever feels comfortable for you.

Coughing can't dislodge anything. The port is burried in muscle. People get Pnomenuia after surgery all the time and their ports don't become dislodged.

My doctor said I couldn't do anything to bust my stiches or anything like that, it'll just hurt.

I asked the nurse looking after me in the hospital post op - she said it was fine, however it felt comfortable.

I couldn't sleep on my side for about a week, I'm a left side sleeper. I did however specifically ask my surgeon if it could dislodge the port or cause me problems. He said no problem sleeping that way.

I like my left side as well, but would be happy with the right side. I was banded on Tuesday, so I am only 2 days out. I can't sleep on either side yet. I prop pillows under knees and my head and sometimes shift my legs to one side or the other.

Glad to know it's okay to do. I realize how fortunate I am to feel that comfortable to be able to do so.

Last night, the gas finally got to me, though!

I slept on my side, because I CAN'T sleep on my back.

I found if I held a pillow against my stomach and then rolled onto it, that it helped a LOT.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
