Unfill for PS - how to avoid gaining weight?

Recommended Posts

My doctor took me from 3.2 to 2.7 a few days ago. I think I have started to gain a little weight. Just wondering how you dealt with your unfill?

Julie I scheduled my unfill for the day before my tt - my band dr wants me completely unfilled for surgery - I was getting scared that I'd start to gain and I've really been working to lose 10 lbs prior to tt so I didnt' want it all to be in vain. My only advice it start using fitday.com or thedailyplate to track your calorie intake. Make healthy choices and try to pysch yourself out by telling yourself you aren't allowed to gain anything before surgery. I also scheduled my re-fill for one week post op. We figure we'd play it by ear and if I happen to be too tight at that time to get refilled then we'll wait a week. I sympathize with you, I actually told my dd today that for supper the night I get unfilled I'm going to have a cheeseburger and fries. How crazy is that. OH and I said, I'm going to guzzle a whole bottle of Water. LOL thats my crazy FAT mind working. Yep the best thing for me is not to get my unfill until 3:15 the afternoon before my surgery.

Steph, I have a confession to make. I don't feel like I have good restriction unless I can stop and PB. That doesn;t mean I throw up on a daily basis or anything like that. I just means that I don;t feek like I can stop eating until I have the PB sensation. I know that is an unhealthy way to look at things but its the only way I can lose weight. I lose about 1 lb per week. That being said, the last few days I have been able to consume about 1 to 1 1/2 cup of food now. I like the idea of counting my calories. If I can stay to the recommended 1200 I should be fine. Thanks for the input. Julie

Julie,

I had my slight unfill the day before my TT surgery. I've done fine until today. My TT was 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I have been eating every piece of chocolate I can get my hands on. I never liked chocolate. I think I need to schedule a fill. I'm like you, I need to feel a PB coming on to know I'm done. I always thought I was the only one.

Good luck.

Cheryl

no, you're not the only one - count me in. Which is why I NEEDED the band and which is why I already scheduled my re-fill!

I just called for a fill and was told that the earliest appointment was for May 12th. I can't go that long! I just ate dinner and ate far more than usual. Sitting around the house bored is causing me have an appitite like I haven't had since being banded. I need to go back to basics, again.

Oh Cheryl so sorry you can't get in until May! My band dr has a fairly small practice so its not too hard getting a fill when you want one. I can usually get in within a day or 2. But just to be on the safe side I figured it was better to schedule a month ahead. ;) I work at a country club with a great chef, with the kitchen just outside of my office with those wonderful smells enticing me all day, without a fill I'd be a gonner. Even with the fill I still struggle with the temptations.

Ladies, thanks for the response. I guess I am so use to PBs occassionally I think that is when I'm at my sweet spot. What a sick way to think but it works for me! I am doing much better today. I had a nice 6" Subway turkey yesterday which is very low in calories. I did eat some Chinese food yesterday but basically I had 2 meals and only one alcoholic drink which is pretty good for me. I am trying to keep my calories to 1200 a day so we'll see how it goes. Typically I do follow Weight Watchers and do quite well although I must confess I truly do hate counting points! Long story short, I think I am up probably 1 lb or so but back on track today. Thanks for the insight. Julie

I think I have gained a few in the last week or so. I gave up alcohol 2 days ago so I wouldn't have any extra calories so we'll see if that helps. Its just weird eating almost normal size portions again. My body is in shock!

I use the PB reflex as a sweet spot too..............though I was the only one. Im thinking about maybe getting a small fill. I still cant eat like normal but perhaps eat more than I should. OK, heres my description; I can eat a sandwich, like from subway, but have to take off the top piece of bread. I can eat pizzza if I chew slowly. I even at a it of chow mein and rice, which I could never do with a normal fill. Does it sound like I need a fill? I was down to 145 and just weighed myself and am at 150.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
