When is it OK to shower?

Recommended Posts

Your post op surgical packet should have that information in it as to when it is ok to go from "washing up" to showering/baths.

When I had my last surgery (it was laproscopic) I was able to shower about a week out. You need to let the incisions close a bit more before you hop in there and get all wet and lathery.

they told me to wait 48 hrs before showering... call your dr or the hospital to confirm though. i dont know what you have as far as your wounds go.. they put glue in mine. i was just careful about washing the wounds as far as not to rub them, just the area around them.

My mom washed my hair the day after because I couldn't shower (still a little sore).... but the next day I took a shower all by myself. I was fine. 3 days after, I can take a shower just fine.

I took ,y steristrips off yesterday and changed my bandages!

Thanks for responding everyone....I think they said I could shower 2 days out....I am just scared....I don't know how they closed my incisions....looks like it's just steri strip but could very well be sutures and glue too....I guess I will have to wait until Monday to find out....in the meantime, I will have a shower w/my back towards the Water.< /p>

I showered the next day and my packet said it was okay to, just not to lather up the incisions. And no getting into baths or hottubs, etc for two weeks after surgery. My surgical strips didn't come off in the shower either. Trust me, those suckers are stuck on there pretty good. He probably gave you internal stitches that dissolve.

I also showered the 2nd day and from then on i could shower anytime, they say the strips come off on their own and thats ok. I did have a waterproof dressing for a few days though.

Please be aware this was in Australia though, it may be different there.

I showered in the morning a few hours before the surgery, then I showered the next day.

When I had a hyster the previous year (hip to hip incision) I was able to shower 48 hours after surgery (covered incision with saran wrap).

I cant see any reason that a person cannot shower after a lapband procedure, unless there were complications or other medical issues.

i was able to shower the next day after my gallbladder surgery and they were the same type of incisions. u just cant sit in a tub and soak. They sew u up on the inside with dissolvable sutures. Water isnt gonna get in the inside.

I had surgery on a Wednesday and my surgeon said the first day it would be okay to shower was Saturday and those steristrips I tell ya they are on there pretty good I wouldn't worry about them peeling up in a shower.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
