What can you have on the pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

I possibly may be starting the pre-op diet soon (I got the preliminary phone call about maybe having the surgery on April 29th - just waiting for the actual call now), and I was just wondering, besides Carnation Instant Breakfast, what else can you have on the pre-op diet?

It depends on the diet. Most doctors require one. Mine is only low-carb, but some are all liquid. I don't have my surgery scheduled yet so I haven't started, but I can do the low carb thing for two weeks.

In the end I would do whatever your doctor recommends but... there is no reason you should only have to drink 1 thing. I plan on stocking up on a Protein shake, Vitamins, broth (low sodium) cystal light etc.

I don't have one. My surgery is 4/17.

I'd ask your doc..it seems like all are different.

It depends on the surgeon. Some want 2 weeks of liquids, whether clear or full, some want low-carb, some (like mine) want just one day of Clear Liquids before surgery.

If you end up on Clear Liquids, they should give you a list of acceptable items. It'd probably include things like Protein drinks, sugar-free Jell-O, sugar-free popsicles, and broths. Full liquids would include additional things like thin Cream of Wheat or pureed oatmeal, smoothies, and sugar-free pudding.

The range of things you can have actually isn't too bad. It's the texture that's lacking variety more than anything.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
