Pre-surgery diets... what does YOUR doc require?

Recommended Posts

LoraLei: That's a neat way to think of it...on two levels. I too have a whole 'nother person's (weight in pounds) in me...I hope to be half my current size in the next....year or two? I also have a whole 'nother person in me...the thin one who wants so bad to get out!!

You're right, we CAN and MUST do this! I don't know about you, but nothing else has worked for me and I'm so close to beginning my new life...starting April 9!!

My Dr. requires 3 protien drinks a day and one(tiny) meal consisting of 3 oz protien, 1/3 c. grain such as brown rice, 1 c. veges, 1 T. fat and 1 tennis ball size piece of fruit. Its hard, but I'm sticking to it because I want to get this over with already. I am kind of grateful now that I had to do medifast for 6 months prior to approval from insurance. It is helping me now because it is similar plan. Only thing is I could cheat if I felt like it and the consequences weren't too bad. I just didn't lose any weight! Now if I cheat my surgeon will reschedule my surgury.Yesterday I did eat more than I should have at my meal. So glad I get 1 meal a day, especially after reading what others are doing. I'm on day 5 now, grouchy at times, my poor hubby, but feel better overall because I'm losing a few lbs. Hang in there bandsters!:scared2:

My doctor wanted me to lose 10lbs in the 7 days prior to my surgery, and put me on diet of 4 Medifast shakes (I chose chocolate after the nurse said they're the best/least vile) and 1 Lean Cuisine/Healthy Choice/Weight Watchers meal, or something equivalent to 450 calories. They also said that I could buy the EAS shakes from the grocery store, so I picked up a 4-pack of vanilla, for variety's sake. No offense if you're a fan, but ICK! I'll need to find someone to pawn those off on. I've actually grown to enjoy the chocolate Medifast to some degree.

I have one more day of that before my surgery, and according to my scale at home, I've already lost about 16lbs. I'll take it. Or leave it. You know what I mean.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
