Why would I feel so lightheaded & nauseated after working out?

Recommended Posts

I worked out at Shapes today for the first time. I only did 15 mins stationary bike, 5 mins elliptical, and 5 mins on another cardio machine like a "skiing" motion, no clue what its called. Anyway, I felt great after I was done until about 15 mins or so after leaving while I was driving, I suddenly felt really dizzy & sick to my stomach. I had to pull over & blast my a/c on my face for a few mins till it passed & I was able to drive again. It was scary, I thought I was gonna wreck my car cuz even my vision got blurry when I got dizzy. It came on so fast, no warning at all. What would cause this? My heartrate never got above 140 according to the machines??

Sounds like your blood sugar bottomed out. I get dizzy, shaky, light-headed, sweaty, and just all-around YUCKY when my blood sugar takes a dive, and it can happen soon after a workout.

Are you diabetic by any chance?

WHat had you eaten? Could you just have had no fuel in the tank? The thing is with a lapband it doesnt make your body work any differently. Your body still has the same energy needs, the band just helps you manage hunger.

A small snack before or just after your workout might make a difference.

I am diabetic, my sugars are usually super high like 250-300 even on meds. (glyburide, no insulin) Maybe thats what it was, I have never felt that way before. I am not banded yet, will be on the 11th. All I had before I went was a Protein Shake. Tomorrow I will eat a lean pocket or something & see if that helps. It was so strange to go from feeling so great to so sick in just a few mins.

If it happens again, be sure to check your blood sugar to see if you're low. I'm betting that's what it was. When it happens to me it's comes on very fast, so I usually suck on a couple of pieces of hard candy (just enough to get my sugar level coming back up) and then try to find some Protein to eat in a hurry. That keeps it from crashing again. String cheese is great for this, or Peanut Butter, but I find that there is too much sugar in peanut butter, and not enough protein to keep my sugar level stable. Cottage cheese is another good one for this.

I have to have "fuel" before a workout - otherwise I crash FAST. I typically hit the gym about 40mins after Breakfast - of which I make sure it's not a "protein shake"...For me that's not what works in getting in some hard cardio - I have to have real food. My Doc suggests to keep raw almonds or ostrich Jerky (haven't tried that one yet) with me at all times - Good to pop in right afterwards if I'm STARVED, ... Usually ties me over till lunch.< /p>

It's great your getting a jump start on exercising before the Band - !!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
