OK, I am 2 weeks post op and I am dying for a diet coke!!!! That is ALL I ever drank before. Water and flavored water makes me nauseous, I don't like tea. I am seriously ready to cry. What would happen if I just slowly sipped on a diet coke? Anybody else had one????

Hi,

You aren't suppose to have anything with carbonation in it , but I've found that if my tummy is upset I can tolerate a small amount of ginger ale. Hope that helps.

I was a full calorie Coca-Cola-aholic before my surgery. I'm sticking by my doctor's orders not to try anything with carbonation until at least the 6-month point.

It was killing me, I swear! The first three weeks were okay, but after that I would've taken out a church lady to wrap my hands around her icy can of coke.

Surprisingly, I found that Crystal Lite Peach Iced-Tea flavor seems to take away my cravings for it. Every time I'm ready to cave and give it to my cravings for Coke I make a vow to drink some of the Crystal Lite first. So far (knock on wood) it has taken away my urge each time.

Okay so I just had to chime in - fortunately for me I don't miss my coke too much - I think part of the reason is I was told by my docs that if you DO continue to drink any carbonation, besides the gas it causes, the "stuff" that is in it can cause the band to errode into the stomach - that did it for me....

Good luck -

OH YEAH - I too, couldn't stand the artificial sweeter stuff like in crystal light, and all fo the fake stuff we are ALLOWED to drink - but I MADE myself do it for a few days and you really do acquire a taste to it and it's not so bad - one trick for me was to add 1/2 scoop of Protein whey to a bottle of crystal light - it kinda takes the "sharpness" away and gives it a slightly creamy texture - the lemonade is almost like lemon meringue -and the orange a dreamcicle....

When ever I am in need of a Coke I always go to 7-11 and get a Coke Slurpee. That really does the trick for me and best of all no carbonation which is what we are suppose to really try to stay away from. Give it a try I bet that it will curb your craving. I like to treat myself to one every week to two weeks. Hope this helps! :0

I have the same problem w/my Decaf diet coke still 3 yrs. after surgery. I can drink a can or bottle a little flat or w/a lot of ice, but it's still not as enjoyable. This suggestion may not be very convenient, but fountain soda goes down w/o any problem at all. Let me know if it works for you. Funny thing, I have absolutely no problem w/beer or champagne!

So funny you mention diet coke - my biggest concern about this surgery is having to give them up - I live on them and am trying to wean myself now in advance for my surgery on April 7th. I will miss them probably more than anything else I eat.

Ok so I'll chime in..... I was freaking out about losing my diet pepsi. I mean to the point where a local radio show was having a contest for you to write a poem about anything you love - other than people. I had a poem in an hour or less... my ode to diet pepsi. I was originally sched for surgery on the 12th but it was moved to the 28th. I started my pre-op diet and cold turkey stopped the diet pepsi for 4 days. Then I found out we were changing the date of surgery. Well I started eating again, for about a week and I decided not to start the diet pepsi up again. I really cant believe I could let the diet pepsi go as easily as I have. Put your mind to it and you can do it. I drank probably atleast 8 a day and maybe one or two glasses of Water. Now Im all water. milk and a glass of juice here and there. Good luck.

Boy can I relate!! Banded on 2/20/08. I feel full, but it doesn't stay for very long. I've added foods from next phases. Helps some, I don't seem to have any problems with any foods yet--except if I take too big of a bite, or not chew enough. Does anyone know if this will change after my first fill? I have a month to go before my first fill also. I also feel like I'm overeating sometimes.

So here are the things I've heard. Don't know for sure what's true and what's not:

The carbonation will cause the pouch to expand.

Once you have good restriction if you drink carbonation it will deaden the nerves at the top of your stomach that make you feel full.

If these are true, then neither of them can benefit weight loss.

One suggestion that I heard somewhere and I cannot imagine that it would be tolerable because I think the thing that most of us love about our soda is the carbonation.... but, someone suggested pouring it in the magic bullet (blender) and giving it a whirl until all the fizz is gone and then drink it.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
