I need another job. My parents are having to help me out because I can't pay all of my bills. After taxes, I'm only getting paid $300 every two weeks, for crying out loud! It's killing me! I can't sleep because I'm so stressed out about finding extra work. And I'm darn near unemployable because my only work experience is teaching labs/classes and one internship from 2004. I can't even look for stuff in my field right now because I can't move anywhere until the semester's over in May.

No matter how bad it seems always tell yourself "it could be worse" or "this to shall pass"

I remember college days, it was a total pain in the arse trying to make ends meet with out help. And a second job was OUT of the question between class's studying, and work.

But remember it will pay off.

What about tutoring? Is that a possibility even if it's not at your school?

I hear parents will pay big bucks to see their kid not fail.

Sorry your having a difficult time with the finances. I know how it feels to have to get help from parents and it's not fun at all. It's the worst feeling. I've had to do it several times and I just hate it because when I try to pay them back, they won't take it, and I hate feeling like I own someone.

I'm not sure what your hours are, but is it possible for you to find something thats not in your field, temporarily, in addition to your other job? I know that would probably be really rough and stressful, but maybe it could work until May? Anyway, I hope things get better for you soon.

Laurend, have you tried a temp agency like Kelly Services or Manpower? Sometimes you can find temporary work doing all kinds of stuff. My sister is a Sr. super for Kelly and she finds work for folks in your shoes all the time. It can be a good way to earn a few extra bucks. Hope this helps!!!

Honestly, I'm getting so burned out with teaching at the moment that I think I'd strangle the kid. I've thought about it, though, but I'm not sure I could pick up enough hours to make it really worth-while.

That's what I'm hoping, right now. I've put in applications with several banks, a bunch of stores, a hotel, a shipping office, etc., hoping to find something.

That's not a bad idea. I'll have to look and see if there's a temp agency around here.

Let's not add murder to the picture, jail could definitely add to the stress factor, lol.

In all seriousness, I've worked in a bank before as a teller. I liked the job for the most part, the people on the other hand.........I won't get into that.

My DH worked in a hotel once and he really liked the job. He worked the night hours and basically got paid to sit around and watch TV, since there wasn't usually much going on at night. He eventually got a day shift, it was more work, of course, but he still liked the job.

Hang in there, I hope you find something soon!

If it were me, and I needed extra work, I'd probably do something like a coffee shop. Not actual food service, like waitressing, or fast food, a coffee shop is somehow different than that (worked in one before). It wouldn't be great paying, but it would be a job you could get with no training and do for a while.

Our only coffee shop is Starbucks, and they aren't hiring right now. That was the first place I thought of, lol, with my new caffeine addiction. :rolleyes2:

Listen Laurend, I know it's easier said than done, but it will get better and it could be worst, really, hang in there and could you look into tutoring maybe? I know how stressing is to live with financial problems, been there done that, it drains you.. so I understand how you are feeling.:rolleyes2:

As someone mentioned before, a motel desk, is often slow through the night, allowing you to get your study time, and grading papers done. If you could get a 3-11 shift, you would have busy time, also slow time, and still have time to go home and sleep. Or even an 11-7 shift, you would have slow time----and could sleep prior to work. I am not sure what your other hours are.

Home health is also always an option. Many allow you to sleep as long as you are there if the person needs you. I did this lots of years ago when I was going to school. Did the night shift with a man who had cancer, and was an amputee---if he needed up at night, I was there to help him....most nights, I got a solid 6 hours sleep anyway.

A question--------can your parents afford to help you out this way? If so, draw up a contract, make it legal, allow them to loan you the money to finish up school. Agree to whatever repayment schedule you all decide on---then you could relax, not worry about asking for the extra each month....that kind of thing.

If they really cannot afford to help you I understand, that would not be an option.

As a parent, who has helped her kids, with school expenses, and home loans---I know I had no issues helping them, as I knew what they were doing was helping them! They have repaid the money, and we all come through it without issue. I have our youngest DD now, we loaned some $$$ for their down payment on their new house. They have not done exactly as we had hoped....her DH has chosen to go back for his masters instead of getting the job that would allow her to continue her education too, as well as pay us back.....but fornow we are letting things sit for a bit....we feel she is under enough stress right now, trying to support them.

Parents usually do just want to see their kids happy and successful!!

Good Luck finding your way through this. Few things are more stressful than money issues.

Kat

What about some type of financial aid? I think I understood that you are a student until May?

Right now, I'm just finishing up my thesis and not taking any classes, so I don't pay tuition. I'm working a day and a half a week, teaching three labs. It wasn't so bad last semester because I was teaching a lecture class in addition to a couple of labs, and we get paid more for lectures (plus I got extra pay because the classes I was teaching were off campus). After this semester, I should have enough done on my thesis that I'll be able to give up my apartment and finish my thesis no matter where I'm living. At the moment, I'm just stuck in an apartment that's costing me almost my entire paycheck (actually, more than, if you factor in rent, utilities, cable, internet, phone, etc.). I'm don't have to have much help from my parents, but I still feel guilty. I'm just really stressed between not making enough money to live on, trying to get this stupid thesis finished, worrying about what I'll do once I graduate (like I said earlier, I'm burning out on teaching), yadda, yadda, yadda.

Well I wish you all the luck in the world Lauren. You are so bright and I am sure you will figure all of this out, and end up with a great career.

It sounds like one of the temp agencies would be a goo deal for you if they have them where you are.

Laurend have you looked into any grant programs for students writing/completing a thesis? I can't think of any off-hand, but that seems like a likely candidate for something out there.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
