One week Post OP! Diet Questions?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 2/22/08. I have lost 19 pounds. My doctors liquid diet after surgery I could have runny mashed potatoes and yogurt. Everyones diets are different. I feel guilty that if I eat those potatoes I will gain the weight that I have lost. I am starting to feel hungry though and I have another week to be on liquids until next week of pureed? Anyone have suggestions?

If the doctor says you can have runny mashed potatoes, go ahead! You should probably limit them to 1/2 cup or so. I remember the first time having mashed potatoes after liquid diet - yummy! Look at the calorie counts for a half cup of mashed potatoes - not really that much.

Take care.

My 2 cents...

6 weeks after surgery is for healing your band for a life time of use...

This is not weight loss mode time!

Mushie beans(refried) are good Protein. Keep liquids low cal. and concentrate on health.. and healing, and getting in Proteins. The weight loss success will come. Best wishes on your life long journey for health.

I agree with the above. Your doctor wants you to take in enough nutrition for your body to heal properly. I agree with you that mashed potatoes my not be the healthiest food, and I was supposed to stick to soft Proteins so you might try those. But the point is to heal and not be concerned just yet about losing weight. The soft proteins made sense to me because Protein is what helps us heal. Also, when you are eating protein you feel fuller longer. Mashed potatoes aren't going to stay with you. I lived on refried Beans, cottage cheese and high protein Greek yogurt. (20g of protein per cup) I was allowed to eat chicken, turkey and fish on day 4, also. But I am not your doctor and don't know if he specifically told you to eat mashed potatoes or if they were just one of many foods he suggested. Do what he said! If he left it open and said just eat soft foods, the ones I suggested might keep you satisfied longer.

I had the same thoughts when I was on mushies- this can't be good for me! But, you really have to focus that it's all about you healing right now. You're not going to eat that much of it & like someone said, the calorie count is not that high. When I tried to look at the acutal amount of calories I was consuming in mushies (small portions) it was probably less than 1/3 what I was having before. Use this time to heal & stay off the scale- it's better for you! Just practice eating appropriate portions and the foods the dr recommended,. When you go back to the doctor you'll probably move on to the next phase & you'll start losing weight after you're healed. Take care !!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
