Looking for some support in Reno!!

Recommended Posts

I am new to the lap band experience. I am scheduled to get banded on 3/28/2008 by Dr Huacuz in TJ, MX. I haven't told anyone I know that I am going to get this done, but would love the support from someone who has gone through this or is in the same situation. Do you have any advice... Would you have done something different?? Let me know...

I am in reno and being banded in reno, so i don't know if that really helps. i am 1 week away from surgery, countdown starts today. i have been on the preop shake dealio for a week now it it aint so bad. i am aware of a few co workers who have had their procedure in mexico and they all seem to be doing well, the only negative thing i have heard is getting a doc for fills after the procedure. hope that helps. g2s

You must be getting really excited about finally getting your lap band. I can hardly wait to get mine... 30 more days. I have run into that with the fills also. I know that there as a Dr. Billy that comes to Truckee once a month and will take people that have been banded in MX. Right now I'm just planning on going back to MX for the fills... At least I will be able to get them done under fluoroscopy and hopefully not need as many.:smile2:

well you got it planned out so that is half the battle, good for you. what kind of eating options do you have before surgery? i have heard that banding in MX includes a lot of luxuries that we dont' have here so maybe an even trade. how long have you had a surg date?g2s

Right now I am doing the Atkins Diet to reduce some of the carb cravings, because I don't want deal with that addiction the same time as I am trying to get used to the band. I will need to do the liquid diet for 3 weeks, because I have a high Triglyceride level and that can cause bleeding during the surgery.

I wish that I was able to get banded in Reno, but I am a self-pay and there is no way that I can afford to pay $14-$16,000.

i am very fortunate to have the insurance that covered me, otherwise i would be SOL. yah same method of madness for me, no carbs slim out the fatty liver so i am doing the same, except this moring i put instant pudding mix in my Protein Shake instead of Jello for flavoring and holy moly, i don't think i will be hungrey the rest of the day! mental note on that one......g2s

I'm glad that you are doing well. I can't wait until the 28th, it seems like time is going by slower now that I am getting close. I think I am going to go with Dr. Billy in Truckee for fills if I don't want to go to TJ. Any advise that you have to offer would be great...

Hello to my fellow Reno'ites

I was banded by Dr. Billy in Truckee and still go see him there for fills and check-ups. If you end up going to see him he is an excelent bariatric doctor he has been doing lap-bands longer than most docs on the west coast and even trained most of the docs at Western Surgical on the technique. His staff is super sweet and supportive too! One warning, he is very very no nonsense! Has a great bedside manner to him but doesn't sugarcoat anything.

Dr. Sasse...that man has a very special place in my heart and always will! He preformed my husbands emergency apendectomy then had to be the one to tell us it was actually an agressive form of cancer and did his hemi-colectomy 2 days later. He is a phenominal surgeon and has the most amazing bedside manner I have ever encountered in my life. My mom calls him "Dr. Howser" because he looks 12  hehe

Nice to see some local faces on here :frown:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
