Problem with alcohol?

Recommended Posts

I want to know the PHYSICAL risks associated with lapband surgery, if you have a problem with alcohol? Is there anything to be concerned about, if all of your bloodwork is normal?

Obviously there's the risk of frequent vomiting from overindulgence. Vomiting with a lapband can be risky.

And then there's the loss of your good sense if you've had a few, eating things that will get stuck, not eating carefully etc.

And lowered tolerance of alcohol. I'd have to say my alcohol tolerance is fairly normal again now, meaning 2 or 3 glasses of wine over a couple of hours is fine for me. But for ages, I really had to watch it, I'd find myself getting very tipsy from one drink. When you're used to being able to have a drink when you're out and still drive, you have to watch that. I may not have been over .05 (the legal limit here) but I was NOT fit to drive.

And alcohol is a load of empty calories and affects your state of wellbeing, your food choices and exercise ability and habits.

BUT - at the seminar I was at last week (for my DH) the doctor said that they find that their patients that have a glass of wine at night actually DO better than their teetotalling patients.

In addition to JACHUT's answer, I can tell you from personal experience that drinking can pick up after getting the band. I was a pretty heavy drinker before getting banded and have really been fighting the alcohol since getting the band Oct 2007. It's easy to transfer behaviors and I've spoke to many people with the same problem. I never thought I'd do AA but I'm going now just to get things back under control. Be careful.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
