What are signs of dehydration?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how much Fluid you MUST drink to avoid dehydration? I am asking becuase I can't seem to keep much down today and yesterday. I had a fill 5 weeks ago and have been okay until now. I ate too much of a Breakfast burrito yesterday morning and I think I may have irritated my stomach and think there is possibly some swelling. Now, I can barely keep Water down. I am thinking I just need to wait for the swelling to go down but I don't want to put myself at risk for being dehydrated. Any advice or suggestions?

Angie

Oh, I'd call the doctor on that one. I know since no drinking with meals, I don't drink nearly enough. I tend to get bad headaches that I believe are from not enough Water.< /p>

Minimum Fluid to avoid dehydration is different for everyone and affected by factors such as how much you sweat, how quickly you breathe, how much you urinate, what kind of weather you're in, etc. The 64oz is a generically recommended minimum. MOST people are in a constant state of very mild dehydration.

Some of the more common symptoms include headache (people will have a headache and take some aspirin or Tylenol, think that fixed their headache, when in reality they were slightly dehydrated, THAT was causing their headache, and it was the glass of Water, not the pill, that brought relief).

Other symptoms include dry skin/cracked lips, and dark urine (among MANY others, but these are the ones that are super easy to identify as dehydration). Dark urine is one of the tell-tales. Properly hydrated, urine should not have noticeable color to it. As a doctor friend of mine says, "If you're pee isn't clear, drink more water."

Now to your band issues...

If you're unable to keep fluids down, and this has been going on for longer than a day, call your surgeon. I personally give it a day because for me, that seems to be about the time to fully get over irritation from being stuck. DO NOT try cold fluids if you are having a hard time. Instead try some hot tea, or even just warm broth or (water thin) hot chocolate. Warm liquids often have an easier time going down which actually seems a little counterintuitive (to me), but for some reason it really does seem to be true for most people.

The Vitamins I take make my urine bright yellow, no matter how much Fluid I take in. But I agree on the headaches, I am finding if I don't get enough fluid in or enough Protein I get a nasty headache. As soon as I take a drink or eat some yogurt or cottage cheese the headache goes away. I too thought it would be taken care of with Excedrin but it was dehydration and not enough protein.

Well yeah, thinks like medications or supplements that are known to discolor urine obviously fall outside of the "if you're urine isn't clear/light" radar. (Because something can be dark yellow and still be clear). My lips & skin are my biggest tell-tales. Ugh, and they hurt too.

They would come in my Grandma's hospital room, and lightly pinch the skin on the back of her hand. Ideally it should drop back down onto the hand--if she was dehydrated it stayed in the pinched formation!

Do you think you might have a blockage in the stoma? Or are you sure it is just irritation?

I am like the others, do not wait too long before calling the Dr. Better safe than sorry!

Hope you feel better soon.

Kat

I'm glad the hot liquids are working for you. I would suggest that you keep at those for a day, maybe even two, and then slowly progress back to foods. So once you're confident the hot liquids are no problem, moev up to something a little thicker like a "cream of..." Soup. If that goes well move on to some mushies, etc. You may have just had a serious irritation that caused swelling. As the swelling lessens, you will be able to add more things to your diet.

About a year ago I was overfilled. I got stuck on a chewable Vitamin and over the course of about 6 hours swelled to the point that I couldn't even get my own saliva down, so I was having to yak like every 4 - 5 minutes. I got it taken care of, but I took about 6 days to work my way back up to regular foods. Better safe than sorry!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
