Recommended Posts

Hi there... I was banded on 1/31 and it is now Monday and I am still at home recovering... I am a little suprised by a couple things... How Painful the gas can be- mainly in my left shoulder... when will this GO AWAY?? I am feeling lethargic but too restless to sleep, its driving me crazy... I thought I would be doing so much better by now, heck, I thought I would be back at work today... apparently NOT. Not to be gross, but I have awful diahrreah as well. I feel like I am falling apart... have even had some doubts and fears about this process... please tell me it gets better

Don't get discouraged. The gas is to be expected after any surgery. I had it really bad for a few days. Gasx and walking will help. The diarreah is also due in part to liquids and such during surgery and only having liquids in your system...this too shall pass.

Hang in there girl, it will get better.

It's only been four days. From what I hear, days three and four are the worst for a lot of people. Some people are up and bopping around right away, but the majority from what I have read have said that the third and fourth day were the worst.

Did you have a hiatal hernia repair as well? That will increase the pain in your left shoulder. I hear that a heating pad is very comforting. Don't forget to keep walking, even if you don't feel like it. This is supposed to help as well.

I haven't had my surgery yet (will be banded on Thursday), but I've read a LOT! LOL

Hope you feel better soon!

Hey there-

I was banded on 1/31 as well. I felt better yesterday than I do today. I walked a mile yesterday outside and was up bopping around all day.

Today I'm really sore and feeling very lethargic. I think it's normal though. I'm not going to stress. Our bodies need time to heal!

Are you using gas-x? It's helped me A LOT with the gas pains. Just rest and relax.

I'm hoping to go back to work on Thursday, but if I don't feel like it, I won't. I told myself I cannot stress anymore about this. I did enough pre-surgery!

It definitely gets better. A few more days and you will feel so much better. The heating pad is a great idea. Some peoples gas can settle in the upper chest shoulder area if you don't get up moving right away. Don't get discouraged you will feel better soon!!! I was banded on Jan. 15 and feel really good. I did get knocked down with a bad cough but otherwise feel great.

Sorry you are suffering so. Thanks to your post many others will LEARN that this is SURGERY....not a simple haircut.

Anytime someone tinkers with the innards there is going to be discomfort to even pain.

Hang in....it does get better!

I didn't have pain (just sore) for 5-6 days. Banded 1/4/08. Then the shoulder pain started. Good Lord!! It felt like a two sided knife in my shoulder. It waws just my left shoulder. I haven't had any for a week or so.

Hi Grace, side bar. : ) I see you have lost 7 lb's below your goal weight. WOW!!! Congratulations!!! May I ask when your band date was? I am scheduled to have my surgery 03/03/08 and really getting nervous about adjusting to being a bandette! : ) But happy about the upcoming weight loss. THANKS!

I read a few months ago, where it helps to get on your knees, with your butt in the air higher than your shoulders, elbows on the bed or floor and rock.

Hope this helps! Welcome to the other side!!

Hi, I found that when you go home from surgery make real sure that you use a heating blanket...wrap it around your shoulders and back! This helps dispell the gas, which is trying to escape. I personally had it gone the next day! Also walking around as suggested before works great. Hope this works for you all! Linda

I know exactly how you feel....When I first came home...on the 4-5th day, I cried...not knowing if I made the right decision, etc. I felt horrible and I was like......what the hell is going on. Remember, anesthesia plays a job on your mind and your body....plus this is surgery. Please hang in there....you will be amazed soon! I didn't think about how awful I felt until I read your post! Thanks for posting!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
