If you were told that if your insurance would cover Lap-Band surgery if you were a little bit heavier, would you gain weight in order to get the surgery covered? If so, how much would you consider gaining?

I did it!!! I gained 10 pounds before my appt!!!!! I wasn't sure how tall I would be measured and for the first time in my life wanted to be shorter!!!!

Now I am stuck with 5 of those 10 pounds. But the extra goodies sure tasted good.

 Congrats Mimi. I know it seems crazy that in order to lose weight you first have to gain weight to appease the insurance gods. :wink2: Believe me I know. I had that discussion on the phone with an insurance agent. I battled with them for about 6 months, which wasn't really that long compared to some other people, but I/they finally came through and 13 months ago I had my lifeband installed.

If I had to go through this all again from the beginning, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It's been the best thing that's ever happened to me. A little (sometimes a lot) tougher than I expected, but well worth the blood, sweat and tears that's gotten me to where I am today. Happier and healthier than I've ever been. :biggrin2:

I did. I was 15 lbs shy of being within my ins. co's requirements. My primary care doctor even told me to put rolls of quarters in my pockets if I had to. He was very supportive. What is really bizarre though is that once I met the weight requirements, they then required me to lose 10 percent of my total body weight as part of their six-month schedule of visits/testing protocol. So then I ended up almost where i started...go figure. And then on my sixth-month appointment when I had lost my ten percent, the doctor told me to be sure not to gain or lose any before I met with surgeon...craziness. Surgery is June 1. So it was all worth it. Although in hindsight, if I had to do it all over again, I would have just taken the cash and went to Houston where it's cheaper and the surgery is done much much more down there than here in my area.

I actually had to gain 7 lbs because my insurance only goes for the 100 lbs over. they don't care about your BMI. I am not banded yet, so hopefully I didn't gain for nothing. Hopefully I get approved!!!!

I had to gain 10 lbs and I really needed to do it because then as part of insurance I had to lose 10 percent and I don't know if I could have done the math as to how many quarters to remove as I went along the 6-month path...:tongue2::) Math is not my strong forte...so I just ate and ate and ate and then you know how usually if you have a temporary weight gain, it's easy to lose...NOT this time. I really then had to struggle to get it back off.

Had I been independently wealthy, I would have taken my 13k down to Houston to my daughter's doctor and not worried about the 6-month plan, but I also felt like I needed the follow-up care because of comorbidities..So, yes, it's a slippery slope the insurance companies have you on.

My insurance denied me because I was 4 pounds under the "100lbs or over" mark. So, I drank a LOT of Water, ate a huge lunch, and slipped a 3 lb weight  in my pocket. Four pounds is not a lot of weight to gain, I would say if it was more than 20 lbs I would not be able to do it.

O.k. everybody, this thread cracked me up but I can sure see where you're coming from. I am going to be self-pay, 15 lbs. to lite so I have really been putting this off because of the money thing. Where do you get these body weights at and what exactly do they look like? Sounds like a good idea to me!

OMG...your blog page was sooooo hilarious. I, too, had lost some weight b/4 intitial visit (13lbs) and was so wishing I hadn't. I had to be BMI of 40 with comorbidities to qualify for ins. coverage for WLS. Lots of Water on the way to appt and stuffed my face for 2 weeks b/4 for a amazingly small weight gain of just 1/2lb. The nurse let me "scrunch" a couple of inches when measuring my height. Love that girl!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
