Hey Everyone! I am going for my surgery consultation at the end of the month...I have the choice between gastic bypass and the lap band....in all of your opinions...what should I do? I have never had surgery:ohmy: and am nervous. There is a ton of info out there on how much you loose when you have gastric, not so much info with the lap. How did you guys feel after the surgery, how much have you lost? Would you do it again??? I know I have a ton of questions!!! HELP!!!:tt1:

My first suggestion would be to google gastric bypass versus lap-band. I just did and there are a ton of articles comparing the two without having to rehash here. Then I would suggest scanning both kinds of forums like this and read about real life stories of people who have both.

The down and dirty difference is:

Gastric bypass gives faster results but the complication rate is higher and there is more of a chance of nutritional deficiencies.

Lap band is slower weight loss but much less in the way of complications and you are able to get your nutrients better.

Hope this helps and good luck with whichever method you decide on.

I highly suggest you read up on both procedures.....as much as you can before your first appointment. I went to my consult with what I wanted to have done already in place in my head.

Of course it will depend on your co-morbidty situation on what surgery would be best for you. However, you must be comfortable with the decision it cannot be made for you, not even by your surgeon.

So read and ask lots of questions!

Yes I would do it over again in a heartbeat, I was off work for only a week and I am feeling wonderful. Best thing I ever have done for myself.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
