Girl Scout Cookies

Recommended Posts

Apparently it's that time of the year again -- Girl Scouts cookie sales. Inevitably, there's at least one person at nearly every place I've worked who has a relative/friend/friend's child who is in Girl Scouts.

I love one particular flavor of Girl Scout cookie: Samoa. It is probably one of my favorite Cookies ever. Because I know that I can't just eat one or two at a time, I have not purchased any in two years. At my previous workplace (I've only been in my current job a few months), there were several people rather actively "competing" to get you to buy the Cookies from their child. I politely said "no, thank you" and one of the people acted very offended -- she kept trying to "sell" me on them. "Don't you like them?" "Yes, too much." "You can freeze them." "I know...they taste great frozen too." "Do you dislike the Girl Scouts?" "No [although I don't have fond memories of being one since I was teased about my weight], I just don't want to buy the cookies." Was it shocking for a fat person to refuse cookies? I have no idea. That probably wasn't it. But c'mon, when someone says no, then just let it go.

Here, there's just a form in the mailroom -- which is much more tolerable. A note stated that the cookies would be delivered in March and I thought, "I'll be banded by then. I don't need them now, and I'll need them even less in March." But it was still kind of difficult to keep myself from signing up for at least one box...and I'll have to walk quickly by the Girl Scouts that will set up outside of the grocery store.

Oh yes, I love Samoas. Before I was banded I remember heading to the grocery store, I had decided I was going on a diet. I was going to buy slim fast, special k, heatlh bars, that sort of thing. But was met at the door by the girlscouts.. No need to wait, they had the Cookies on site. Well, I took my money and bought 5 boxes of Samoas.

I headed back home and sat in the car, I ate a whole box. After I had my binge I was so embarassed and ashamed. My husband had praised me for heading to the store to get my slimfast and what did I came home with Cookies. At that moment is when I decided to take control of my life. I got the band later that year and took control of my body.

I still love Samoas, but have managed to modify how many I eat. I only treat myself to 1 box a season and have one cookie after supper until it runs out. No depravation here, only moderation.

Mariposa Bella, I ate an entire box by myself once, too. That was when I knew I had a problem. Maybe one day I can buy one box a season and eat one a day as you do, but currently I can't trust myself to be that restrained!

I once ordered 12 cases of thin mints, and filled a freezer with them.

This year there's 1 box in my fridge, and I really don't want them that bad.

Oh, and you don't get yours until March? What's with that? They were delivered here last week

I have no idea. I guess I'll never know, since I'm not going to buy any. :rolleyes2:

Unrelated, congrats on your loss! I always feel very inspired when I see tickers like yours.

My husband and I both love the Samoas. One time he came home with a whole case of them! And I wonder how I got so fat! Now I can't get them off my mind, thanks a lot, lol!

Yes I know the temptation of GS Cookies, the tagalongs. My daughter is a GS soooooo we will have some in the house :cool2: But I hope I can stay away from them.

One thing my daughter is doing is this, if ppl dont want cookies because they are on a diet, eating plan etc but they want to support her efforts, they can order some and I am sending them to my nephews and their units in Iraq/Kuwait. Ppl have really responded well and I know they will enjoy them over there more than I need them!!! :rolleyes2: Kat

What are Samoa's? Are they the Caramel DeLites?

Never mind, I went and looked, and they are one and the same.

And I LOVE those little suckers, too. But none for me this year, I splurged on PB patties and Thin Mints and Lemonades.

The Samoas are my favourite too. I haven't bought any in 2 years and I don't plan to buy any more in the near future. I too get the looks and the questions, I just tell them "I have decided to swap junk food for a smaller size jeans" then I smile and walk away. No way will I get bullied or feel guilty for not buying them.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
