Was Everyone Given Antibiotics Post-Op? If So...

Recommended Posts

I was given Keflex to take for 5 days after my surgery. Well, in the midst of everything, my husband and I forgot to refrigerate the antibiotics so, i stopped taking them after day 2. I kind of forgot about them. Well, its now day 6, and I am still in a significant amount of pain and I am wondering if maybe it is because I never finished the antibiotics. I am seeing my doc today, so I will be sure to ask him, but I am wondering if Everyone was prescribed antibiotics after surgery? Has anyone had to deal with any kind of infection besides the port? EEK

I did not have to take antibiotics post-op. Unless you are running a fever, I wouldn't worry. Still, though, you should ask your doc just to make sure.

I was given a five day course of antibiotics, but the doctor told me that this was merely a precaution because during the surgery they give you a strong antibiotic (in my case, it was Ancef). However, I would still ask your doctor.

I read in a book on weight loss surgeries that they have studied the issue of when it's most effective to give the antibiotics to prevent infection & the results were that within 1 hour of the surgery occuring was the most effective time. The study showed that days prior to & days after was not as signficant results as those given antibiotics in the hospital right before the surgery. Good luck!

My antibiotics were given to me through my IV at the surgery center. They started the bag before me surgery and my IV was removed about 4 hours later. I did not go home with any antibiotics and have not experienced any infection so far.

Hi everyone

i just wanted to say that I saw my doc yesterday, and he said it was no big deal that I stopped the antibiotics, and he didn't write me another script or anything. for what its worth:)

I wasn't sent home with a prescription for antibiotics at all. All doctors are different I guess.

I was sent home yesterday with keflex for 7 days for prevention of infection.

However, when you actually do have an infection (i.e. not for preventative measures) it is really important to take the full course prescribed. If you only take a few days of antibiotics during illness, the bacteria can become resistant to the antibiotic, making it more difficult to treat.

Cheers,

Jen

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
