Preop diet - not losing due to period coming

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am on my 10 day preop clear liquid diet. My surgery is scheduled for this Thursday the 17th. When I got on the scale this morning I saw that I've only lost 5 pounds which is not a lot. I am also due for my period on the 17th which I'm thinknig is why I haven't lose more weight. I am worried that not enough weight loss will mean I will not shrink my liver like they want and they're going to be upset with me. Do you think I'm over reacting?

Thanks for any help.

Jeni:confused:

Jeni,

I'm embarressed to admit that I actually gained some weight during my liquid diet. I wasn't watching my sodium intake with the Soups I was having and before I knew it, I was up 5 pounds. I was able to take the 5 pds. off before surgery so I basically weighed the same as I did when I started my liquid diet in the first place. My surgery went fine without any complications and the surgeon never said anything about my liver being too large or in the way. I think having just liquids really helps with shrinking the liver and if you happen to lose weight it's an added bonus. Good Luck!

Jenn

Don't ask me why, but I did gain 2 pounds on my week long modified Atkins diet - no bread, potatoes or rice - ( I cheated only once and had some sugar) Anyway, it did not stop me from having the surgery, my doc was not worried and everything went fine. I am on day 5 now. Don't worry:)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
