Is this normal??

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone! I was banded on Dec 28th and I am just wondering if I am at a "normal" stage. I had a lot of pain after surgery, much more than I was expecting. Last Friday (2 weeks out) was the first time I felt somewhat normal. Earlier last week I had some severe pain at the top of my stomach for which the nurse pract. told me to take liquid ibuprofen as she thought it was swelling. Well still to this day I can hardly eat anything at all (and my band was not filled at all as of yet) and I can only eat pretty much liquidy things without getting severe pain. Even mashed potatoes with minimal lumps hurts sometimes, and scrambled eggs hurt too. I have found I can eat cheerios in milk as long as i chew up the cheerios really well. I just feel like this isnt normal two weeks out especially since my band is completely open. I just dont want to live on Slim Fast forever, I could have done that on my own. Please Help!!!

my guess is after two weeks out your still gonna have swelling. but other than that i felt ok. and im suprised your allowed ibuprophin. i was told no ibuprophin, i would talk to the dr. not the nurse practictioner about that one.

I felt similar when I first started on puree. Make sure whatever you have has lots of liquid. It will help slide through the band easier. Soon you should notice that you will need to make it thicker to stick in your pouch longer.

Have you tired cottage cheese? It has been a lifesaver for me. It is now officially my comfort food.

Yeah I was only allowed to have the ibuprofen for 3 days, this was per the nurse pract. at Weight Loss Surgical Center where I had the surgery. After your surgery, you never see the surgeon again there. You only deal with the N.P.'s I just hear other people say they are able to eat chicken and stuff and dont feel any restriciton and it makes me worried. I guess everyone is different.

Airika,

I didn't try anything solid for three weeks so I'm not sure about the pain. Are you following the diet plan that the center gave you? At three weeks I was allowed purrees. For my dr. that meant Soups that had been completely blended and the like. Mashed potatoes were still out at this point. I could have cream of wheat but it had to be completely runny. I have to admit that since I didn't care for that consistancy of stuff I stayed on cream Soups during this week. After 4 I could have mashed potatoes and that consistancy...a lot of oatmeal and cottage cheese.

I guess my advice would be to take it slow. If some food is bothering you take it back a day or so. My guidelines said there will still be swelling on some people for up to 5 weeks and only to eat what was tolerated.

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
