help me narrow down mexico surgeon choice

BTW: off topic for this particular thread...

But the Lapband has been a God send to me. I used to wear a size 24 and now wear a comfy size 8.

I'm a huge supporter of the Lapband even with complications that unfortunately happen to some and even with negative things I've heard about a lot of Bariatric surgeons in the U.S. and Mexico. I still think the Lapband helps more people than it hurts.

And even though I would be devastated if I lost my band, I would be forever grateful that it has given me the past 3 years of living a much healthier and happier life.

At the risk of getting flamed I am going to say my piece.

First let me say I have NOT had the lapband but I have had experience with Dr Arturo Rodriguez. He was supposed to do my VSG a few weeks ago but due to a monumental bank screw up it had to be cancelled but that is not the point.

My point is I came on to this board tonight to see about getting info on how folks handled liquid diets but when I came across this thread I could not keep my fingers from responding.

I also tried to get hard facts and sources from WASA on another board and not only could/would she not give me her sources or cites for her stats she became rude and disresptful and finally put me on ignore.

I had a conversation and several email exchanges with Dr R about the accusations Wasa had made and I found his answers to be credible. He did talk about the band they used over 10 years ago and was honest about the problems that resulted, hence they stopped using that band.

As for all the hype about Dr Sanchez, the man is dead and accusing others of being incompetent or worse because the associated with him defies logic to me.

I wish I had been able to have my surgery with Dr Arturo Rodriguez. The reasons I am not have nothing to do with any concerns I had about him, had nothing to do with my doubting his skills and everything to do with timing and location.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, however when folks starting spouting facts and statistics they refuse to back up that is no longer an opinion.

Mindy,

Yes I did just change it. I realized that the one I had was a couple years old, so I thought I would put a more recent one up. I had lasik surgery so no longer wear glasses. :-)

I thank God daily for the Lapband.

Firstly, sorry for hijacking this thread, but cosmos, you have, well, I'm not sure if "offended" is the correct word, but you've definitely ruffled some feathers by this: "This lady says Rodriguez hit on her.

Rodriguez is a rich man in Mexico. If he made a move on this gal, I'd conclude that she dosen't need to loose weight.

Isn't that why we get lapbands, so we can be thin and sexxie ? Sorry Ladies, I'd need some strong proof for that one"

Ok, I am sure there is no one who despises being overweight, fat, huge as much as I, however, even if I wear a size 1 and could blow away in a strong breeze, I am aware that (#1) there is someone for everyone (you know there are guys that are so attracted to large women that they will encourage them to eat?, in fact, i was once told that i was too small for a man who loves large women.) and (#2) some men (and i am sure there are women too) will take advantage of a situation if they can.

Now I don't want to get into the discussion on whether or not a Dr. hit on a patient (completely unprofessional if it did happen/completely wrong to say if it didn't). What I upset with, and i've seen it before on LBT (of all people to express this, i'm just in awe), is that if you are a large person, you are not worthy of, well, of anything that the beautiful people are.

You think only because someone is large enough to get the band, they are not attractive? You think that a large woman cannot be beautiful?

Or, do you not believe that possibly a person in the capacity of professional in your life, when you are at a low point, possibly feeling inadequate, inferior, trying to get a band to improve not only your health but also your self image, that this professional could take advantage of that, for his own personal gratification. So he's rich, I've known rich guys who threw away everything for a little romp. I know rich guys who should lose everything for what they do. Just because someone has money it doesn't mean they have class.

Again, I am not saying anything happened or did not happen. I am upset that one who (I am assuming since you are here) has been/will be banded is so negative towards large women.

Dear Coltonwade

For example. I believe that I came close to death the day after my banding in 2006. I slowly regained my breathing with 3 nurses holding me during a blackout, and Dr. Rodriguez looking on. They had used 2 1/2 hrs more gas on me than expected for the banding. All toll nearly 4 hours worth of gas.

Lets say I would have croked right there on the spot.

Someone else researching Surgeons the next year, would other people be able to find out what happened to me ? Or if I had suffered loss of mobility, speach, brain dammage, range of motion, etc. How would other people find out about me during thier research ?

Would it be secret ER grapevine innuendo, with nobody allowed to speak the truth ?

Or would there be an offical public record ?

Or perhaps, "Tomb of the unknown Gringo" ?

Im not quite sure why you are directing this towards me ?

I AM For research , I do not think that EVERYTHING has to be HARD CONCRETE facts in order for things to get out . I think people needs to know that docs do . I think there NEEDS to be public records of what happens to patients. the problem is there is not . there is sure in the US If something really bad happens , in mexico its even harder.

the careless things docs do on a daily baisis that takes time to catch up to them is not "public" its those types of things that "leak" out and personally I think are VERY relevant .

I am sorry you had a bad experience, rough time , horrible experience, words i am sure do not come close to describing it . Luckily you are here to tell others about it . That is the best way to get the word out .

thanks

Sorry Coltonwade

Just following along, I began to think you were a well of knowledge that would not run dry. You seem to know more than me.

Anyway, judging from your answer I'm thinking door #3 would not be out of the question. Tomb of the Unknown Gringo.

Your running debate about provable info is at the heart of this question. I worked in Mexico for 4 years. I ain't slamming the Mexican people but what we all know is that thier legal system is much more relaxed than ours. Especially if you needed a favor in thier records department.

My conclusion is that I do fully believe an American could drop dead in the ER, be thrown out with the trash and never, never make it to the research center where other people could discover what happened. If that sounds extreme just bear in mind that I did work there 4 years straight. I saw many a Cop paid-off.

I dont think I know more than anyone . LOL

If you worked there you i am sure know more than I in regards to Mexico .

I worked in the US medical System for 14 yrs. I also worked in a US medical Mal Practice Attorneys office. So trust me NOTHING surprises me .

And I think all 3 possibilities are a vary viable option . Honestly I think it depends on what doctor you go to for the out come .

And that all goes back to research . I think we are on the same page ? no?

I have employee's that are also friends ( they have worked for us or known us for a very long time ) who said " YOUR CRAZY to go to Mexico ( when i was considering it ) and ya know what ? they are FROM Mexico . they know the "ugly" Side of things as well. Like i said I think we are on the same page as far as this is concerned.

Dear New Hope

Others here have pointed out my insensitivity, and rightly so. You are correct. I hope to put this fire out soon. I blundered.

When I quit smoking I had to deal with a lot of people who intended to smoke cigarettes if they had to go to Hell to get a light. I made a decision that I had to be true to myself. It's sometimes difficult. But I focused on what I believe and what I want. Thats the standard I'm using because I learned from the people who would argue that smoking cigarettes was very healthy. A person has to be able to identify a problem in thier lives. If someone can't identify the problems they have in thier lives then they will never be able to get on the road to recovery.

The best way I like to say this is, you must win the psychological war going on in your mind. If you loose the battle on this spiritual plane, you have no chance of winning in the physical world.

Sorry I offended you.

Cosmos...who were you banded by in Mexico?

Dear JKPenny

I had the pleasure of being banded by Doctor Arturo Rodriguez in Monterrey Mexico in 2006. Rodriguez had complications during the surgery and kept me on Gas for a total of 4 hours. The banding should have only taken 1 1/2 hours total.

I came down with pnuemonia and couldn't leave Monterrey for another 2 days. By the time I got back to Houston I went straight to the emergency room and stayed in the ICU for 4 days.

My band never worked. I never felt any restriction during the fills. About 8 months later I had to borrow money, go back to Rodriguez ( which nearly cost me a divorce ), and I was debanded. Very Costly !!!

I presume it shows that I'm bitter. I have to accept that. It just goes with the territory. I hope that my experience can save someone else from making a disastrous decision.

i Am Looking To Do My Lap-band In Mexico, And I Am Looking At Using

Dr.jaime Ricardo Ramos Kelly. Could Anyone Tell Me If They Have Used This Doctor And Where Can I Go To Research Any Doctor In Mexico?

Please Research On This Site About Dr Kelly. I Almost Picked This Dr Thru Mylapband.com But The More I Researched And Got Feedback On Him, I Went With Another Dr. I Was Banded On 5/22/08 And Very Happy With My Choice. If You Pm..me I Will Forward The Email Of Replies I Have On The Dr That Were Not Good. Also Mylapband.com Would Not Give Me My Deposit Back, But Was Glad That I Lost That Money To Be Banded By A Great Surgeon.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
