Hi I am on the pre-op diet day 1 and I feel so depressed, bored and grouchy!!!

I was just wondering how everyone else got on with the pre-op diet or if like me you are suffering now with it.

Peace and love

Yea, I pretty much suck. You'd think I had never starved myself before! I am having such a hard time! If it were just me, I think it would be different, but with my husband and the two boys, there is always food needing to be made and I don't know how much more of this I can handle! Boy, I'm cranky! I have just called EVERY person in my phone book today, to keep my mouth moving without thinking about the food that I'm not supposed to be putting in my mouth! What is my problem! Why is this so hard. I shoveled my neighbors driveway the other day, and she came over today with a freakin BOX OF CHOCOLATES to say thankyou! What the heck!

I am on day 5 of the pre-op liquid diet. It has been pretty tough, particularly because I have been CRAVING tacos. But I have managed to stick with the program. I have lost 6 lbs. in 4 days and that sure helps to make me want to stay on track. I suppose that I have cheated slightly because I have had some cream Soup but I have managed to stick with just liquids.

Best of luck to you!! ;)

My pre-op diet was low calorie, low fat and then two days before surgery Clear Liquids.

I followed it! I knew the reason for the diet was to help shrink my liver, so surgery would be easier.

Would have been harder if I had the two week pre-op liquid diet.

I consider myself lucky that I only had to cut carbs out! I added a week extra to my pre-op just because my BMI is so high. I also cut out all sugars.

It was hard. I cried last night because I just freaking want a sandwich!! A stupid sandwich! I don't even LIKE bread but boy do I crave it right now.

Thankfully my surgery is this Thursday so I only have a few more days until hopefully I will be sore and not wanting to eat for awhile! Then I have to worry about bandster hell! ;)

I've said this before on here, and I'll say it again.. I don't understand why some lap band doctors require this dumbass liquid diet! My doctor puts his patients on phase 1 of the South Beach Diet and he says that it gives the same exact results as the liquid diet does. Cutting carbs completely out. He said he USE to require the liquid diet but realized people would cheat too much because it's just too hard to do. Why do these doctors require such a strict thing before they need to? I can understand why after the band you have to do liquids for a short while to heal, but before if you don't need to? STUPID!!

If you do decide to "cheat" (I hate calling it that), I would do no carb items that are on that south beach phase one list (there is a thread you can do a search for it). Protein stuff like chicken and tuna. And then veggies.

i've been on it 2.5 weeks now, and the only cheating i've done is had a handful of almonds every day... for some reason, i just cant live without them.

i get nervous every now and then wondering if they are "carbs" and if i've screwed everything up (surgery on wed), but i have lost 9kg, so i figure i havent done too badly.

I'm sorry to say but today I have completly failed on the pre-op diet.

My surgeon wanted me to eat the following daily:

Breakfast: None

Lunch: 1 x slimfast

Dinner: Micro meal e.g. under 500 calories.

Fine so I started yesterday it was a struggle but I managed it, today however I was so weak and I had the shakes as well that I have just binged about half an hour ago. I feel fine now I just feel like I've let myself down so much.

Thistledo how do you do it???!! It's not for lack of will power, having hardly any food makes me feel very ill.

On top of that I was supposed to work, I know I would have fainted in the office LOL.

So I've decided that I will start again tomorrow but I will have a small Breakfast just so I can start the day off ok. Therefore I am doing everything they told me to do with just the added addition of Breakfast.

My BMI is very low so hopefully the fat round my liver aint too big (I cross my fingers as I write LOL)

Ok so back onto the positive stuff, all you guys out there that are sticking to it I praise you, you have such strength and are doing excellent!!

You'll probably laugh, but when I could'nt take it any longer I went to bed!! During the day it was okay because I was at work and occupied. The 3 Protein Drinks seemed to take the edge off as far as pure hunger, but boy did I miss my regular foods. Night times were the worst, therefore I bailed out & slept!!

it isnt easy Lauren, i just try to remind myself this is a one-time only thing.. although yesterday was really hard... i thought the last couple of days would be easy (getting to the op) but it's not.

i concur with going to bed  i did that a lot during the first few days. it does get easier after a few days. i was told day 4, but for me i didnt feel better til day 6.

now i'm stressing a little cos i havent lost anything for 3 days... but i figure my body is now totally in hibernation mode cos it's been living on nothing for 2.5 weeks and my metabolism has probably ground to a halt.

this time in 2 days, i'll be heading to the hospital!

good luck lauren and pm me if you want to chat.

I was told I could have a small piece of boneless skinless chicken breast every few days if I needed it to "get me through". I did really well the first 5 days with out food but come the 6th day I did eat the small piece if chicken. It was totally amazing how much better that small bit made me feel. I am sad to say I did eat chicken 3 more time since then but always boneless skinless and I hope I didn't mess up to bad. I go in we. the 16th for me band! ~Laurinda~

I was supposed to be on liquids for two weeks. I "cheated" only with solid protien (usually lowfat cottage cheese, chicken, or venison) until two days before surgery. Then I just did the liquids. I never cheated with other foods, and I didn't go over my 1000 calorie limit. I lost a lot, and my doctor said my liver was fine.

BTW, I read that the diet is not so much to make the liver smaller as it is to make it less slippery. They have to retract it with a paddle and a fatty, slippery liver is harder to retract. I did NOT cheat on my post surgery diet!!!

We were told to be on Clear Liquids for 5 days prior to surgery. We had to have Protein added to these Clear Liquids however. I used unjury chicken flavor and had broth. We could eat as much of the clear liquids as we wanted no limits.

I admit the first couple of days were not fun since I did this while working fulltime. However, I stuck to it, and I lost 10 pounds in 5 days and jump started my weightloss, I am glad I did not cheat.

It is very important to shrink your liver, because it is directly in the way of this surgery, and it is also easy to nick it. As it was my spleen was nicked and I spent the night in the hospital.

I am not for cheating in this whole process, simply because cheating is what got me here in the first place. By telling myself this "One time" won't hurt.....LOL Well it hurt me all the way to a whopping 287 pounds. I will never be that lacksidazical again about my weight or about eating the right things. Even now when I do allow myself a bite of indulgence I feel guilt..LOL

Heck, no, I didn't cheat. I knew it as for a reason (to shrink the liver and remove the fat from around it to make the surgery easier - in some cases to make it even possible!)........

and I could think of nothing worse than being put on the table, the doctor taking a look at my innards, refusing to do the surgery and sending me home. Can you think of anything worse than having everybody back home say, "Pssssst......did you hear about Gayle? She was TOO FAT for FAT SURGERY!!? Dang! How humiliating would that be!!????

So, no, I didn't cheat. I used good Protein shakes and vegetable broth and SF Jello and SF pudding and lots of Water and tea. Once you get the carbs out of your system (4-5 days) the craving gets better and you can do it!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
