Why no drinking BEFORE a meal

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have been on tons of websites for Lapband & see that most Dr.s say no drinking 30 min before you eat. I understand why you don't drink with your meal, or after your meal, but I can't grasp why you shouldn't drink before the meal. Some of the websites say it is fine to drink before, but those of you that have been told not to drink before - why is that?

The answer I heard was that the Fluid fills up your pouch making you unable to eat a whole lot without filling up.

I do know that Fluid doesn't just slide through the pouch, it drains out slowly (think of a funnel).

So, the effect can be kind of like drinking with a meal if you eat while there is still fluid in the ol' tummy (meaning it helps wash food through making you eat too much).

That being said, for me I usually need to drink a little warm tea before eating to help me eat. But I try to get the tea down and give it awhile before eating.

The reason for not drinking while eating is because the liquid can stretch your stoma ( pouch) . Also if you drink before you should ( 30-60 mintues after you eat ) the liquids wash the food through the stoma faster and you will be hungry faster and sooner than if you had not drank .

I drink up until I eat and then an hour after eating.

DId i make sense ?

I always drink before meals but wait at least an hour after to start drinking again. I think the no drinking before the meal only applies to those that are severely restricted. I could see then how the drink would take a while to leave the pouch causing you difficulty in eating. But for me, mine slides right down so I drink up until I eat.

The no drinking before meals is I think a standard for most docs . I think its because they dont want your stomach filled with liquids before you eat.

Liquids do not take a while to go through the stoma. If you have ever had a fill under flouro you can see this. Granted it does not go straight threw but it does not take long, Im talking less than 30 seconds ! Now with REALLY good restriction it will take longer but nothing like 30 mintutes .

But like you I also drink right up until i eat. But most docs say no drinking 30 mintues to an hour before. My best advice follow what YOUR Doc says.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
