Splenda and gas pains

Recommended Posts

I often add Crystal Light or Wyler's to my Water with no problems. Since being banded, though, I have bad gas pains and, at times, terrible cramping. This is the only time I use artificial sweetner. Has anyone else had trouble with Splenda since being banded? It's the only thing I can think of that could be causing problems.

I use a lot of splenda too and it doesn't bother me. BUT...I have experienced "gastro-intestinal" upsets of varying kinds from other sweeteners so I'd say it's possible you're consuming too much Splenda for your body. Either that or perhaps you're getting in artificial sweetner through a different food and you don't even realize it and that's what's upsetting you???

Either way...yes--those things can wreak havoc on you if you accidently ingest too much!

I have always used a good bit of Splenda and still do-but I have had the horrible gas since I was banded 6 months ago!

I was using sugar substitutes in my coffee. I had terrible acid reflux. I switched to sugar and it went away. Could be a coincidence but 2 tsp of sugar a day in my coffee is better than all the chemicals of the other stuff.

I'm a member of this club for sure!

I cannot have Splenda. When it was first out I wanted to like it. Their website even states that it does not affect the tummy like many others. It does for me. Too bad because there are a lot of new foods out there made with splenda.

I only have Nutrisweet and if I am home making tea I'll use Stevia from TJ's.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
