Will this work for me.

Recommended Posts

:confused:My husband and I have both decided to get the band done. My mother in law is also going to do it with us. We are scheduled to have the surgery on January 24th. My question is, I don't have but maybe 40-50 lbs to lose and my bmi is alot lower than my husbands and my mother in laws. Is this surgery still going to help me get where I need to be. I have been overweight most of my life and I have lost a tremendous amount of weight but always seem to get it back. With two back surgeries under my belt I don't move as much as I used to so it is very difficult for me to lose the weight. Do you think this will work for me?

Do I think it will work for you? The question is, do YOU think it will work for you? The band is like any other WLS. If you do it "right" it should work. If you drink cake batter, like one post I saw, probably won't work so well. If you get your fills and follow your doctor's advice, probably. If you NEVER get a fill, you'll just be hauling around a hunk of silicone, so probably not. My wife is NOT in to exercising. She likes butterfinger blizzards. She eats like someone is going to take it away from her (fast). And she has still lost around 75 pounds over the last two years (slow loser). But your experience will be entirely YOURS. And your hubby's will be his. And so on....

I had so many doubts myself because I've never been able to really lose any weight permanently! I ate the proper foods, worked out four days a week (two at Curves and two at the YMCA), didn't have any co-morbidity issues, began at a solid 213 (all the health personnel I saw throughout testing asked why I was having the surgery!) and have a goal of 157 (took the ticker to 150 just to round down)--which is only 56 pounds.

If you read and learn everything you can about the band and your future new life (and especially having your husband and mother-in-law for support), you can make all the changes necessary to succeed. As Mykdsdad said, each person's success or failure is gauged by their own lifestyle, because this really IS just a tool that we have to use to our own advantage!

My best wishes to all three of you for a happier, healthier life! :)

It'll work if you make it work. I have a terrible back too but even just walking is great exercise.

You found a surgeon who will do your surgery with only 40 lbs to lose??

Do it. I was told by a million people that I didn't look big enough for WLS. My BMI barely made the cutoff to qualify- and honestly, after the liquid diet, I was probably already under a BMI of 35. But why wait until your BMI is 45 of 55 to get this intervention?

Like you, if I lost 50 pounds, I would be pretty slim, not "normal" according to the BMI chart, but slim enough to look good for my height/ build. To a person with real food problems, 50 lbs is just as hard to lose as 100lbs. So far, I am very very pleased with my band. Now, I eat rationally like people in the movies, instead of like a human garbage disposal. Just regaining that sense of control has been worth it so far.

The lapband will aid anyone to their weight loss goals if they follow the program. The thing with the band is it levels the playing field for me. I am not overly hungry all the time, therefore I am not in as many positions where I can cheat. I find success through a balanced diet high in Protein, and I also exercise everyday. I have given up fatty foods, soda, junk food, and sweets.

I am not sure if I would get the band to lose 50 pounds as I see this as a "last resort" measure, but I have not walked in your shoes. I sincerely wish you and your family the best of luck. Keep coming to LBT it is the best resource for information.

CAKE BATTER?!? :faint:

I agree with everything you said, here. It fully depends on the person.

I say go for it. If you've been having back surgery, every tiny bit of weight you put on is detrimental to your mobility and well-being. Health-wise you HAVE to stay leaner or you are inviting many future problems. I think it's great thatthe three of you are doing this together. You will not regret it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
