Vacation WWYD

HI all,

So here’s a little WWYD… My husband and I are heading to Disneyland next week (we’re huge Disney fans) and it’s our very first trip going just us as adults. No kids, no stroller, no schedule just the two of us running wild in the parks for a couple of days. It’s Halloween time, so you know what that means… all the fun, delicious, not-so-healthy treats are everywhere. Last time we went with the kids, we walked around 9 miles in one day and that was at stroller pace. This time, we’ll be going full force all day long to do all the things we normally can’t when we have the kids with us.

We’ll probably share most of our food, but I’m torn on whether I should track everything or just let myself enjoy the bites, licks, and tastes guilt-free since this isn’t something I do all the time. I’m 20 months post-op and feel like I’ve got a handle lifestyle, but at the same time, it’s always a little scary to “let go” and not worry about tracking because that fear of gaining weight back!

I think don't put pressure on yourself by tracking every last bite. You'll likely be walking most of it off anyway and you deserve to enjoy yourself.

For me, when I've been away on trips I do an end of day log on My Fitness Pal but it is more in case something didn't agree with me I can look back so I don't put in my usual exact measurements, I guesstimate. If I miss something I don't worry, I'm on holiday and whatever I ate or drank is still going to be much less than old me. 😁

I think the whole point of having your surgery was to allow you to live a more 'normal' life. Your restriction shouldn't let you go too far off the rails. Of course you want to eat mindfully but I say get your protein in and then enjoy ALL the tastes after that - I suspect they'll be tiny but will mean a lot. I hope you have a fantastic time.

This won’t be an every day or even a regular occurrence so I wouldn’t beat yourself up or worry too much. It’s only for a couple of days. Once you’re home you’ll be back in your usual routine.

Certainly your smaller tummy, restriction, won’t allow you to eat large amounts which will help. As will all the additional activity you’ll do. Just make the best choices you can & that includes the portions. You have to be able to live and enjoy your life.

Enjoy your vacation.

Oh, I am so jealous, never been there and it would give me so many steps for my day. I hope you have a great time and that includes snacking on some things beyond the diet. When I went to the state fair this year I did indulge a bit and I tracked it, but felt no shame for going over my calories. It was interesting to see what (lack of) nutritional content was in the cookies, funnel cake and pulled pork slider but I wanted to stick with my logging my food and be honest with what I ate. I just knew I was going to go over and allowed myself to with no guilt. I have seen some of the amazing food choices at Disney and you should sample what you can (without having to share with the kids) and live a little. Say hi to Minnie for me!

track when you can, don't stress when you can't (or just don't want to).

some is better than nothing.

nothing is better than stress, ha!

the ultimate goal is to handle all of this on auto-pilot, sans stress. enjoy your trip!

We walked 25miles between two days at the park, we ate allllll the things. I let myself be in vacay mode but I am back on track. biggest NSV was not feeling sore or feeling like I wanted to die after all that walking!

I have gone on many vacations since my VSG (close to 12) and I never track nothing. I always come back having lost weight.

Enjoy and don't sweat the little things.

I absolutely did not lose weight LOL!!! I am up 8lbs but have already lost 5lbs of it. Most was water weight but I am back at it. I enjoyed the heck outta myself. It was tough to come back to reality!

For a vacation, I’d look for a mix of relaxation and adventure—somewhere with good food, nice scenery, and maybe a bit of culture.

Is that not Disney summed up? 🤣
