Just starting out

Recommended Posts

Hello, I’m just starting the process I have an appointment next week to start stage one of Molina Washington state requirements. I’m nervous because my BMI is over 40 which is on the list for being approved but I don’t have any comorbidities. Does any have any experience being approved with just a bmi over 40?

What does the insurance wording say?

“BMI of 40 or X with comorbidities

Likely it is an either/or situation not necessarily both but if it’s not written clearly, contact them for the clarification.

Must meet one of the following three criteria:
1. Must have a minimum body mass index (BMI) of > 30 with a diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus.
2. Must have a BMI of > 35-39 and must have at least one of the following conditions:
a. Degenerative joint disease of major weight bearing joint(s). The member must be
a candidate for joint replacement surgery if weight loss is achieved.
b. Other rare chronic conditions (for example, pseudo tumor cerebri) in which there
is medical evidence that bariatric surgery is medically necessary and that the
benefits of bariatric surgery outweigh the risk of surgical mortality.
3. Must have a minimum BMI of > 40
Here is their wording. I’m obviously number 3 I’m just worried it’s a case by case basis and they won’t approve me.

It won't be case by case. If you are 40 BMI, you will qualify without co-morbidities. Their wording is clear enough you could take it to court if they denied you.

Sounds like you'll definitely be approved by the looks of their wording!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
