GERD, Indigestion, Acid Reflux

Recommended Posts

I had Gastric sleeve with Hiatal Hernia repair on June 1st. I've had a few different issues like a skin rash, numbness in my legs, but the biggest one is the Acid Reflux. I've had it on and off for a few months. The last 2 weeks it feels like a lump in my chest and throat as well as feeling like there are chunks rolling around in my stomach. The heartburn is truly awful. I'm on omeprazole and take tons of Antacids. During my endoscopy they found out I had gastritis but without h pylori. My doctor is having me go back to liquid diet for 5 days and double my omeprazole during that time but it's not working. Has anyone experienced this? I need advice or things to ask my surgeon because I don't think I'm being taken seriously!

Yep, me. I had to be on 80mg of Nexium daily, Pepcid as needed for breakthrough, and it still didn't help. I had severe gerd, gastritis, esophagitis, and polyps all through my stomach and duodenum. 4 endoscopies later, I had to have a revision to a bypass. Changing my diet didn't help. Eliminating exercising didn't help. All the antacids didn't help. I never had any gerd or reflux before the sleeve, but it was debilitating after. Revision was the best thing I ever did.

Yes its a thing for me too. I take the English brand of a PPI twice a day and the yucky thick stomach meds after every meal. I did not suffer this before surgery

I suffer if I eat too late or eat the wrong foods late in the day. I have found that my favourite spicy and acid fruits are not foods I can eat after 6pm.

I sleep with a big wedge under my pillow. I still wake up in the night, about once a week with acid trying to get in my lungs and making me cough. Its the only downside to my life saving surgery. If I knew beforehand that this would be a consequence, would I still have had this surgery ? Yep, I would

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
