Gas After Bypass Surgery 💩

Recommended Posts

How bad REALLY is the gas right after gastric bypass surgery? Did you just let it rip in front of all the doctors/nurses or did you try to hide it?? 🤣🤣🤣 What helped it and how long until you felt better? I appreciate the input so much as always!! TIA 😊

The gas from surgery. I just let it rip. Especially when I was cramping so badly. The nurse even encouraged it. There is zero shame in the hospital... lol

My nurse said you will burp and farther and we encourage both! LOL

I did neither. And not a lot of pain from gas.

How much pain you have is variable. I had none after my sleeve but I really knew about it with my gall removal. But the surgical gas is mostly in your abdominal cavity not in your digestive tract so burping & farting have minimal impact. The surgical gas rises up behind your lungs putting pressure on nerves which cause the pain. The gas is absorbed into your lungs & breathed out. Walking, marching on the spot, pumping your arms up & down, slow deep breathing all help you breath that gas out. Heat packs can help with any discomfort. It usually takes about a week to fully pass.

Additional burping or farting can be from the shakes, any sugar alcohols used in the shakes or drinking too quickly, plus the change in your digestive process could be adding to it while your body gets used to the changes. GasX may help with this gas.

As with everything if it persists or gets worse give your team a call.

that may be an individual thing. I don't remember being any more "gassy" than I was prior to surgery. I do know certain carbs can make people gassy, though.

I did not have bad gas (gastric or trapped) but I moved around a lot. Walking is your friend

So interesting how some people have such bad gas and some don't! I thought that pretty much everyone had it because I was going off a support group I was in and the therapist told me that her Gas pain was worse than 2 c sections that she had! And another girl the same about having a lot of gas and I was like whoa sounds pretty bad! I'm going to do what I have to do if that's the case for me no shame in my game 😅

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
