I took a gulp of Water the other night & half went down the wrong way. I burped which is incredibly weird for me as I can’t burp. Then I could feel it starting to come up - my last bite or two of my dinner. I sometimes think it’s because I can’t burp that I do have issues with the foamies & can’t release what may be a gas bubble adding to any blockage or slowing the passage of what I’ve eaten.

I often worried about having an attack when out @Lisa XO. I quizzed my surgeon’s colleague at a follow up. She agreed that my worrying it might happen was likely tightening my oesophagus & my tummy increasing the odds of me getting the foamies.

I overcame my fear and went to a family graduation party last night that involved a ton of food and alcohol. I didn't test anything except Arby's roast beef, no bun and a small bit of potato salad since I knew I stomach mashed potatoes pretty well. All good.

My fam kept offering me alcohol and I kept turning it down while I sipped my Water. No way was I going to try it then attempt to drive home. I had a good time and glad I went. Baby steps :)

I had my first episode of foamies today. I’m 3 weeks post op and I am cleared for soft foods. I had a scrambled egg and i think i ate a little too fast. I definitely felt it in my chest. The pressure and my runny nose was the cue that I probably ate too fast or I ate too much. Anyways I vomited the dreaded “foam/slime” and proceeded to vomit some of the eggs. Now I wonder when can I drink Water ? I’m currently laying it out and trying to relax myself. Scared the sh*t out of me tho.

I had it too the other day with some scrambled egg. Again, not sure if I ate too much, too fast, or what. But it SUCKED. Wanna know what was even worse? I was at Target when it happened. Hubs was getting his hair cut and I was going to wait there, and felt yuck, so went to Target in the same shopping center. Thought it was all out and I was good. Nope. Walking around store and it just foams up in my mouth, so I ran to the kleenex aisle and got some and opened them up and used them to spit that nasty mess in. This happened 4-5 more times a tiny bit at a time while walking around, until hubs was done, and I took a little sip of Water. So yeah, def going to not eat scrambled for a while.

Almost 3 months out and even though I think I know what's safe or doable for me at this stage, still surprises me. I can eat something one day just fine. Another, my stomach isn't having it. Sadly, I approach each meal now with a bit of trepidation. Like... is this going to go well? It definitely gives new meaning to conscious careful eating to avoid those damn foamies.

My first episode, I drank because it felt like something was stuck and it was painful. With each sip I was hoping to dislodge whatever it was and bring it back up or push it through. Water wouldn't even go down. I kept telling myself, I'll feel better after I throw up. Eventually I did but it took hours.

Another time I just laid down to let it pass but neither episode was pleasant.

Scared me too but I have made peace with it to a point. If we could eat everything easily, we would probably never reach our goals. And from what I've read our tool's effects won't last forever.

I carry around these nausea bags in my purse for such occasions. Because you just never know. Not very discreet but I feel better knowing I have them.

I find I can have a little sip or two of Water after an attack but I am a lot further out. You can try & see how you go at the moment @Cheesekitty7. Some people do struggle with eggs in the beginning but it usually passes so that could have been the cause of yours - just your tummy saying nope.

I find the foamies can be delayed and can occur 15+ minutes after I’ve eaten or drunk too @brandiwine. Don’t know why. I’ve always put it down to just me.

What is it with scrambled eggs at the moment?? They set me off last week too & I’ve never had trouble with eggs. Just my quirky tummy keeping me on my toes.

IDK but I stopped eating eggs every morning since my last episode with them. I prefer to drink my Breakfast. At least for now.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
