Anyone taking ozempic after having surgery?

Recommended Posts

Had anyone's surgeon recommend also taking injections? I'm at my 6 month post op, 115lbs down and would like to lose about 60lbs. I was surprised when he mentioned this without any reserve at all. Just wondering if this is the new normal?

I would be... definitely questioning that. 115 pounds down in 6 months is a huge loss, so you're doing really well as it is. Stay on track, and you'll lose that 60lbs in another 6 just fine without needing a drug that increases nausea and makes you not hungry. I sincerely hope it's not the new normal! If you were struggling with a return to bingeing or overeating and you were gaining, then maybe I could see the reason? But if you're doing fine, which you seem to be, then I'm scratching my head.

Unless you're really struggling to lose, which with your numbers you don't seem to be, I don't see why that's necessary unless you need it to control your sugar.

The 115lbs is from starting my journey may 2022. I have lost about 65lbs since my surgery. I'm still going to question why doing anything more. Even though I still want to lose, I'm not in a race to do it. Thanks for the input.

One of the reasons I had surgery was to get off medication’s. In my opinion, this stuff is just poison. The side effects are considerable and the weight loss temporary as you will regain once you go off the medication.

I don't know about Ozempic but your surgeon may be going by the recent studies that showed that starting WLS patients on pharmocologic agents after surgery stopped future weight gain.

Studies show that half of the patients gain back a third of their weight back, and the medication prevented it. I think it's really up to the individual. I know for myself that I don't want to take any thing (not even "natural" otc appetite suppressants because then I would have to rely on it instead of figuring out the real reason behind me wanting to eat) but if my weight does creep up, I might consider it. I don't know. My fear of being over 300 lbs again has always been a good motivator.

I was on Ozempic for diabetes and it works WONDERS for that. You do get full faster so weight loss can be a side effect. With that said, the side effects were just not worth the benefits for me. More often then not, I felt like crap. I took it years before my surgery though.

I started Ozempic 8/11/23, yesterday at 0.25mg. I have been stuck in the 230s for over a year now. 3.5 years out VSG. Hoping it helps me get back into the swing of things. Will monitor closely for side effects.

I have been on Mounjaro now for about 5 weeks now. I'm 10 months out now and down 151lbs. Not sure how long I'll stay on it but also pre diabetic. Still not sure what I think about it, but decided to see if I could tell a difference. So far, not really.

My fasting #s are in the pre-diabetic range to. Never below 105. This way insurance will pay for it.

There is a new lawsuit out, claiming that these medication‘s may cause gastroparesis, which is paralysis of the stomach.

Yes I am aware of this. Hoping to modify diet and keep the dose low 0.25mg to 0.5mg to avoid complications. Maybe reach goal then quit.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
