Should I do breast reduction before or after Lap-Band sugery?

Recommended Posts

All,

I'm not certain what to do, so I figured I'd check with folks who've been there. I've been approved for breast reduction already and I'm going in for my first appt. with surgeon/dietician this week to discuss lapband surgery. I've completed a bunch of pre-paperwork (paperwork they review even before they'll consider you for an appt.), so I've passed the first step. My breast reduction approval is good until the end of March '08. I know that there's awhile to wait before you can get your lapband surgery, if approved for it. My concern is if I have the breast reduction before the lapband will they turn me away for the lapband? I have upper back problems and, gosh, if breast could be donor organs I'd have signed up long time ago!!!! My plastic surgeon said that they only drawback he could think is that they may become smaller than I'd like (no problem to me!!!). I just want to make sure that (a). I don't blow my chance for lapband surgery AND (:). my boobs don't end up sagging a whole lot, if at all, if I have it done beforehand.

I don't want to wait until after lapband surgery to have my reduction if I don't have to. I have about 88 - 93 pounds to lose. I'm, at the least, a DDD.....swigging low~w~w!!! I have upper back problems also. "High Beam Headlights" would be awesome. I'm tired of walking around with poor posture because of them.....they get in the way! Also, I'm wondering if the insurance would still pay to have it done once I have the lapband & lose weight. They may not consider it "medically necessary" then. Decisions.....decisions...... Any suggestions?????

HI-

I started out a 44 DDD - F before my lap band July 25, 2007. I'm now at a 38 DD with about an 80 pound loss give or take a couple of pounds. I would have to agree with your doc. If you're fat goes, the fat in your boobs does too. Have you always been larger breasted? I've been at least a C cup since I was 10 years old. By the time I was 13 I was a D cup. I've never been below a D in the last 23 years. That is from 150 lbs all the way up to 282 lbs. I guess what I'm saying, is if you have alot of breast mass and not just fat mass, then you could have the tissue removed and not get too small. If they're big because of your weight, then you should wait until your close to your ideal to have them taken down.

Hope this helps, cause I'm going to have mine lifted after I hit my ideal.

I agree. I had a BR 3 years ago. Although I don't regret it, I would recommend doing it at or nearer goal.

Things change so much when you lose weight.

Good luck.

I would certainly wait till closer to goal. I've never been small chested. I would be devastated if I'd gotten the surgery then shrank them up with weight loss and ended up with an A or a B cup. Nothing wrong with that size for those of you that are there :) It's just not for me. At my tiniest I was a D cup. And besides, my hubby would NOT be happy ;-)

I so understand I need to get the BR because of back problems but don't want to be a A, B maybe a large C. I love my girls but the sagging and back pain and not being able to to wear halter tops without a bra , and the peep hole u get with button down shirts I can do without ....

Have you discussed this with the plastic surgeon? I would also be concerned that your ins co. will not approve you after March 08 because your breast size will be reduced and may not be at the guidelines they allow to pay for it.

do you know what the guidelines are for your ins. co. At what breast size will they pay etc.

Then maybe you could lose a little first with your band, but do the reduction while you still meet the guidelines and maybe the surgeon can compensate at the time of surgery making you kind of tight? I don't know if the last thing is possible.

I would talk with the plastic surgeon.

Great advice here.

I'm at a 48DDDD right now. I've lost close to 60 pounds and the boobs have barely budged. I still have horrid trapezia pain and shoulder soreness. This I treat with Naprozin. I spoke with the doctor and he said we need to weigh the options of back trouble and pain NOW versus waiting another year or so. I'm going to go in for an evaluation anyway. My insurance covers NOW but may not cover when I get down as they consider it cosmetic. There is % they also go by.

Post back your plan, I'd love to follow it.

with my insurance they just require that you have some type of phyiscal problems in the last year, meaning back ache , bra strap digging in shoulder, shoulder pain and a current pic. but I think losing the weight is more important than the BR I can live with saggin boobs and but If you don't lose the weight you might not live long enough to enjoy the new boobs

Thanks for all of the feedback. You're all right in one way or another. I did get approved for Bilateral reduction AND for the lapband, thru my insurance. I spoke with both the plastic surgeon & my lapband surgeon. I am so sick and tired of digging brastraps, upper back pain, and the aforementioned "peek-a-boo" shirt! :) Also, the bad posture is enough to make ya ill when you see yourself in the mirror! The lapband surgeon didn't see any reason why we couldn't do the surgeries at the same time. I've never lost a lot of weight in my boobs when I've lost weight before, so I'm going for it. I based my decision on that fact, plus that my insurance does have a minimum # of grams of weight that needs to be removed, plus health issues (mine being my disk problems plus some arthritis in my upperback) to be approved for them to cover the surgery. I can't afford to pay for it myself, so I'm going for it at the same time. My surgeries are going to take place on March 11th (2008). I figured that I wouldn't get approved once I lose weight from the banding. I'm going to speak with the plastic surgeon to see what he plans on doing (ie. higher/tighter/whatever). My appointment with him isn't for another month & a half. Once I find out what he plans on doing I'll let ya all know! :eyebrows:

Anytime I've ever made it to goal, my boobs have shrunk considerably, but it seems like they are always the last to go. I bet as you get close to goal you'll find them much smaller!

I know I will need to get a lift eventually, but I don't anticipate needing a reduction once I lose the weight.

Exactly! My Plastic Surgeon recommends doing it before goal weight for just the reason that shortgal says. He was right, and waiting until after goal weight means I no longer qualify for insurance payment of this procedure. (So I make sure my Bandster buddies get it before goal if they are aiming for insurance payment. If they can self-pay or finance, then they can wait if they want. But the insurance company wants to see large volume breasts before they pay, and at/near goal - then your breasts may still need work, but no longer have large volume left.

Think about it!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
