Recommended Posts

I had the weridest call today.. Not werid, but to me, Im confused.... Let me start off by saying.. I have had 1 appointment with my Dr. I guess to just talk.. thats all we really did anyway. I had my Dietain appointment over the phone, not even in person. and I had my Psych Evaluation. My paper work for the Ins. is still in process. I have talked to my Dr.'s asstaint over the phone a few times just discussing the other Appointments. Thats were I am now.. Or this morning...

Okay I read and read and read this site and others, So many diffrent things, Tests... appointments... everything like its all organized.

Anyway, Im here sitting online and my phone rings.. its my Dr. office... Im thinking oh hes just calling to fill me in on Ins. or my Psych evaluation or something.. No to my suprize he had a date.. yes surgery date!! Ahhhhh shocked me silly I got so confused I couldnt be happy.. March 14th??? What?? No Im not ready, I need Money, Hubby needs Vacation hours?? Ahhhhh..... No tests??? just plop on the table and get to work???

Okay maybe Im a little to confused... Anyway I called back and asked if we can do it in April... Now he sounded confused... geezee... okay so probably April.... seems like the process should take longer... I dont know again im CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for listening to me rant and rave.....

<STILL Confused>

Hey Trish,

How can you have a date if your insurance hasnt approved this yet?

You are right - you shouldve had something like a EKG, chest x-ray AND certainly bloodwork before this surgery... mabye they will have you do these test a couple of days before the surgery ???

...and your dietitian consulted you over the phone??????????????????

Ive never heard of that.

Now Im confused!

The only test or appointments I had before my surgery was my blood drawn. My doc heard from my insurance before I did. Then I got my letter a few days later. Maybe he is giving you the head up about your insurance!

Oh there is no question about wether i want this or not... I do want this.. to the point that i need it....

He gave me the date w/out garanteed approval because, My Ins. Co. doesnt have me on Direct Exclusion.. i dont know what that means, Thats what the asst. at my Dr.'s office said.

He said that I would have all my tests done the day before surgery, I just didnt know how fast results can come in.

I did my Dietitian over the phone to save me a 400mile trip down to Colorado. She told me that she would meet with me next time I was in Colorado, but she wanted to get the paper work done.

I guess his call this afternoon caught me off guard and I wasnt expecting to hear a date so quickly....

I would go for the March 14th, but I cant I dont have the money to make 2 400 mile trips.. including hotel in a 2 week period and my husband doesnt have the vacation time bulit up yet... (they give vac. time every other week depending on how much he works)

Im still a little weided on the call... but I think it will be okay.

Hey Trish,

I don't think there's anything all that unusual about the way your doctor is proceeding. In many cases, insurance won't even consider a request for precertification UNLESS there is a surgery date chosen. Way back when I was where you are, the first thing the doctor did was choose a surgery date and everything proceeded from there. Dates are not carved in stone and can always be changed.

No matter how prepared we think we are, though, the first time we get a date is indeed a bit of a surprise. It's just another step on this road, and you're very much on your way!

Hey Trish, I've had my surgery date since the first week in January. I've had that date set before some of the other test. I met with the dietician, and the surgeon on the same day, and the psych eval was taken care of a week later.

It is possible that it is easier for them to schedule the operation first, and the smaller test, like ekg and other "stuff" in smaller time slots.

Don't worry, it will be alright. Sure, it is easy for me to say this, since I still have over a month to go before my band installation....

Thank You all so much! I got worried there for a bit... I think he just caught me off gard today i guess... Well it will be in April instead of March.. That gives me time to save for travel expenses and for hubby to save time in his bank at work. But you all made me feel at ease Thanks again!

Jack,

you said......... I tend to think of dieticians mostly like the nice firemen that came to visit you in the 2nd grade to tell you the reasons to not play with matches....

I never would of thought of it that way.. good thinking hehehe

Trish,

This is all so wonderful! Knowing when your surgery will be will give you time to prepare. I am still sitting here wondering when mine will be and I've even had all my tests already. My Dr. could just call tomorrow and spring it on me. I am trying to get prepared and dont know when I will get to stop worrying about "WHEN" It has driven me bonkers not knowing. This gives you 1 and 1/2 months to get things together. This time will go by so fast. Your surgery will be done before you know it and you will do great.

Most of the time a dietician's work really isn't where you get the largest part of your information....they are good in some circumstances...

In my situation, the dietitian's report to my insurance comp. played a very - VERY vital role in my approval.

Heck, if I couldve done it over the phone I wouldve!!!! Lucky you ;)

And my doctors office wouldnt give me a date till they had a letter of approval from my insurance company... see, everyone has a different journey! :)

Regardless, its gonna be here in a snap!

Trish,

I know! I have been doing the pre op diet my doc ordered for me and I have actually gotten used to eating on the Atkins induction. LOL everytime I feel like complaining I remember that in 10 days I will be on liquids.

I am trying to make all of the nessecary preparations and think ahead to somethings I need to get out of the way that I wont be able to do for 4-6 weeks. Like stretching my canvases.

Keep me updated on a specific date and I will write it on my calendar.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
