I feel absolutely horrible, and I'm honestly wishing I'd have never gone threw with this surgery, and I never thought I'd say that because I was so excited to finally be able to have it done....

I had sleve surgery on 9/26 at around 10am , I was relised on the 27th by noon, I live 115 mile from the facility I had my surgery at... I've been having some issues getting enough Fluid and have been in contact with my beriatric team,... and I was told because I haven't been able to take in more then 30-35 oz a day, and nothing els they wanted me to go to the er/ urgent care to get fluids....

The urgent care here said they cannot do just fluids I would need to go to the ER, so I did.....

The surgical nurse that I had help me originally was very nice (she was helping give a lunch) and hooked me up to an iv right away and got me settled in ..... the doctor however seemed less then pleased that I was even there.... and when he found out I had a pain contract (witch I'm the one who let him know) and that I just had sleeve surgery he was pretty much dismissive of me at all, he wanted to know surgeons name (I gave him that) he informed me he will be calling her before doing anything els, witch he did.... then he came in and told me I needed to not take so much pain meds, (I only took what was prescribed and less then was perscribed) then told me he would be discharging me.... his nurse was back in the room and removed my IV in less the 5 min (I only had a little over half the bag of fluids) gave me my discharge papers told me to only come back if I'm severely dehydrated (I already had the symptoms they said to look for) and that the doctor suggests I get a electrolyte replacement powder instead of coming in to the ER....

I'm not sure what to do, and I'm wondering if anyone els has had issues with medical personnel when they learn you're on pain meds or had a WLS done?

I want to add that I'm sorry if I came off as ungrateful that I was able to have the surgery, I am grateful and i am planning on working my program. I was very emotional and upset when I was typing out what happened. I think I'm more upset that I didn't stay in a different town for my recovery.... and I'm hoping to never have to go to this hospital again if I can help it...
The doctor just make me feel like me feeling dizzy, not being able to drink much, and not going to the bathroom in over 10 hours (probably tmi I'm sorry) was all my fault and I deserved it and had no right going to the hospital for help.....

I have another surgery I'm supposed to have done in 8 months (for my back) and u will definitely hold off until I'm able to save enough to stay in a different town for recovery.

Wow!! I am shocked at the drs behavior. Dehydration is a serious issue with this surgery. It can make you feel terrible. Is it possible to go back to the clinic that did your surgery? At least they would handle it differently, I would l hope.

Unfortunately it's about a 2 hour drive if there's no traffic, can end up closer to 3 1/2 during the day, and I have a little one in school so it's not ideal, but that may be my only option if I can't get rehydrate on my own, or go to another hospital out of town.
My mom was with me and when she asked him about giving me another bag of fluids before sending me home (she thought I'd at least get the first bag done before they discharged me) he simply stated not in my hospital check at *names hospital I had surgery at* maybe they can
So I'm assuming that will be my only option from now on....
I do have a appointment with my primary doctor, who is amazing, On Tuesday and her office is attached to the urgent care, my mom is hoping she might be able to get them to give me fluids while I'm there.

thats so stupid wow... as far as hydration. Google in your area IV Therapy. and see if anyone offers it. In my area several companies offer IV hydration. You pay and get the IV bag and you can have Vitamins and other things added to it. The ones that put the IV in your arms are all RN's I have been wanting to go to one here soon. I am 6 months post op and i still struggle to get in more than 40 oz of Water a day. Below is a picture of the menu offered at my local hydration center. yours will differ. Basically we choose the IV Bag, add however many vitamins in it we want and thats it.

I would be on with the director of the hospital telling them that you were not treated before you were released. I would ask them if there is something they did not tell you because when you got there they agreed that you needed fluids to the point they stuck a needle into your arm yet at some point They randomly decided you didn’t even need to complete a whole bag and basically kicked you out still feeling sick. At the very least you should not have to pay for that visit. Ideally they can get you in for fluids from a professional doctor!! Hopefully, they take a closer look at that doctor and his treatment of people. Your pain contract shouldn’t have ANY bearing on your asking for fluids??

i would try contacting that team again and tell them that in your area the process must be different and you are having a hard time getting fluids. Maybe they can make a call and arrange it.

I did Google that. Thank you for the idea but unfortunately there are none in my area, u do live in a small country town so that probably has alot go do with it but next time I'm out by one I'll definitely try that

Can your mom stay with your little one when you need to go to the out of town clinic for hydration? Dehydration is a major issue with this surgery, and it's nothing to play with. I'm so angry for you that the ER doctor treated you that way. In no way was that ok.

Maybe your mom could drive you and your daughter there and keep an eye on her while you get fluids. That would make the most sense, if she's willing.

She is willing, I'm hoping to hear back from my doctor before I make a trip out there, but I also have an appointment with my primary doctor tomorrow as well, and she's awesome so I'm hoping between all this we can figure something out ...

So I don't know what a pain contract is, but I can pretty much guess what it is. From what you described it sounds like the doctor treated you like a drug seeker, which is frustrating and hard to get physicians and other medical personnel to not assume.

I would report to hospital administration to reflect the experience you had. If you go back for dehydration and encounter the same type of treatment, you can ask why you are being denied adequate care.

I went through this during my pregnancy and it took a surgeon to call screaming to get my ob/gyn to finally give me nutritional support.

Just so everyone knows a pain contract just states that I am getting regular pain meds from my primary care, or pain management specialist because of chronic pain issues, and by letting an er doctor or other medical personnel know we are on a pain contract it's supposed to let them know we do not accept any pain management from other sources such as the er or urgent care without pre approval from our pain contract doctor...

Some doctors around here do not like this at all and believe if you are On a pain contract you should not be treated by er or urgent care unless it's a car crash or something like that..... and I honestly don't understand why if you are not there for anything pain management related ...

I am sorry with the doctors…incredibly frustrating. Some doctors don’t agree with this kind of surgery and get a complex over it.

For trying to keep up with hydration I recommend trying a variety of beverages. I found Water on its own difficult but warmer beverages were easier at first. Tea, steamed milk, etc. I also found I had to basically take a sip, burp, take a sip, burp. It gets better, I promise!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
