Exercise and Port Pain

Recommended Posts

Does starting to exercise make the port pain go away quicker? This is excruciating for me- I can't sit up in bed or lay on my side.....I just had surgery Thursday- but want to be moving around. (without hurting so much)

Calm down and try to rest, the pain will go away in a few days. Don't think about exercise yet, your body needs to heal and you are probably full of gas too.

Two weeks post op is a good time to start.

I had surgery on 12/11. Felt so good by 12/17 that I overdid and ended up in the ER on 12/19. Rested like the surgeon told me too after that and now I feel awesome! I was so worried the pain would never subside, but it has. I love my band. I am worried that now the swelling has gone down, I 'm starting to have an appetite for more food. It's going to seem like forever unitl my first fill on Jan 22.

No, exercise does not make it better. Just rest up. If you exercise too soon, you risk injuring yourself. Especially don't do any ab work before 6-8 weeks po.

Good luck on your recovery!

Oh no, Kathy. Your story starts off exactly like mine did. Did you use Betancourt medical in TJ?? I did. And like you, I was having pain at my port site, they told me it was tilted and inflammed. If you did use Betancourt, please don't allow them to try to fix the problem. They very well could make things worse. I found an American doctor to treat me, and we've been dealing w/ my port infection for almost 2 years now. She had to go in and flip my port back over, which she was able to do. However, we haven't been able to kick the infection. I will probably have to have the band removed soon before the infection, that was diagnosed as pseudomonas, causes irreversible tissue damage, if it hasn't already.

I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

I never had any port pain at all until I started exercising. The floatation belts for deep Water aerobics KILL me. I have to go without one. WOW! What a workout that turns out to be!! Now that I've started doing Ab work, my port hurts all the time. I know that the port is stitched to a muscle. When this muscle tightens, does this cause the pain and soreness?

I had port pain, stress, discomfort for 2 months post op. My overall general surgery soreness and pain went away completely by one month.

Give yourself time, everyone is different. :D

Aubrie - I have some port discomfort especially when I am using the stomach muscles. My pilates instructor said that made sense to her as the stomach muscles are pushing on/against the port. I had surgery in late 10/07 and as I do more exercises and strengthen my abdominal muscles the discomfort is much less. My first time back on a tread mill with an incline (after only walking outside) I thought my port had come loose it was so painful. It definitely gets better, how quickly seems to vary greatly person to person.

Take care.

Hi Anyalee

I am two weeks post op and everything is fine except for serious port pain. My experience is that exercise does not improve the pain. I tried walking but was in a lot of pain afterwards, so now i'm trying to keep up the pain meds and rest my body.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
