I had gastric by-pass on 3/23/2022. The week after surgery I had the worst gout flare up in my knees. I usually have issues in my ankles but since the surgery every other week I have a gout flare up in one knee or the other or one ankle or the other. I have been on Allpurinol and Colchicine but nothing seems to help. I was wondering if anyone else has been having the same issues and if so were you able to find any type of relief? It is to the point I have had to have Fluid drawn off my knees and steriod shots which is a first for me.

It’s not uncommon. Generally they attribute it to uric acid, which is stored in your fat, being released into your blood stream as you lose weight. Much like other hormones stored in fat are released & cause levels to rise while you are losing - oestrogen, cholesterol, etc.

No suggestions are how to manage it though, sorry. But talk to your doctors for possible solutions or help.

Pure cherry juice helps relieve gout, although it is like pure sugar and I am not sure if you can have it now.

I was allowed light juice cut with 50% Water. Maybe if you water it down it would help but not to the full effect?

Wouldn't hurt to ask your surgeon or nutritionist. My FIL. swore by it every time he got gout.

Flares of all types are common after surgery. Anything that is inflammation based can flare after surgery.

I don't have gout, but my father does. He can't take the normal gout meds like you take due to kidney issues. So he takes tart cherry extract. His comes in a capsule. I'm not sure if it's a vegan capsule or not, but nonetheless you could pour the contents into yogurt, or Water, or something like that. When he flares up really bad he takes steroids. So your doctor could administer a steroid injection. That would be safer post surgery than steroid pills.

I'd reach out to your prescribing doctor or your bariatric team. You don't want to keep the inflammation going when you're trying to heal. And you don't want to be a fall risk now either with fresh incisions.

ahhh that is better than the concentrated cherry juice i suggested, especially for being a bariatric patient.

I know that since excess Protein can worsen gout, it's common to have gout flare ups after surgery. Talk to your surgeon about what you can do - I understand that certain protein sources are worse for gout than others, maybe changing your diet could help?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
