Fluid Intake

Does anyone have a hard time getting 64 oz of fluids in during a day? I know this may sound odd but I rarely get that much fluid in each day. I am struggling with pre op fluids so Im actually worried about post op once I have surgery on May 3rd. As far back as I can remember I do not drink that much fluids. Ive really been watching it lately and keeping track, if I am lucky I may get about 50 ozs in sometimes 55 ozs. If I push it and drink the 64 oz amount I literally feel bloated and sick to my stomach. I started my pre op liver shrink diet today and since 530pm I have been bloated and feel horribly full. If Im like this pre op how the heck will I be post op.....??

a few years ago I started drinking a 16 oz bottle of flavored water first thing every morning - as soon as I'm out of bed, and before I eat breakfast. Once I started doing that, I rarely had problems

Yep. My liver shrinking pre op diet starts 4/29. I started trying to get the 64 oz each day as of yesterday, to practice. My god I was in the bathroom SO many times. My body is used to being dehydrated. So I hear you, it is work!

I have always drank a ton of water. Upwards of 100oz a day. I peed all the time.

Once I had surgery, I never pee. I mean I do, but just a few times a day. I am drinking about 70oz or more of water a day right now but it is like now my body needs and absorbs every drop instead of just peeing it out.

I thought it was interesting to see the difference.

Im actually doing much better than what I was when I made this post. I have had to adjust how I was doing things. Now by about 1130am I have half of the water drank. So things are looking up a bit good in that respect. I should imagine after surgery Ill be right back where I was struggling to get it down lol

Does anyone have a particular protein powder they could suggest for the first week after surgery in case my tastes change?

I have such a hard time getting my fluids in daily. I was a terrible water (any fluid really-all I drank was water & 1 cup of coffee) drinker before surgery but now I feel like I am drinking all day long & still not reaching my goal. Also, I have to have my water very cold. It gets warm so quickly that I lose interest. I am about 2.5 weeks out and I sometimes get a rapid heart rate with dizziness. I am told this is because I am dehydrated.

By yourself a nice Yeti covered drink cup. Put about a third full of ice and the rest with water and it will stay cold for a long, long time.

Same with coffee...keeps coffee hot for hours.

Thank you, will do!

I too was a gulper. I reached my water goal yesterday and today I will exceed it. I agree with using the flasks that keep water cold. I love my hydro flask!

My team says 48-64oz. Obviously more Fluid is better.

I have always been a huge Water drinker, drinking upwards of 100oz a day before surgery. But I was a chugger too, so I started working on that part before surgery.

Now, after surgery I had to figure it out all over again.

I put myself into a routine to hit those goals since 4 days after surgery.

8/16oz at wake up-breakfast-16 or 20oz bottle-lunch-16/20oz bottle-dinner-drink until bedtime.

I am also allowed to count any fluids towards my goal, like milk for example. So, sometimes my breakfast is a glass of milk for the liquid and Protein.

They also have hydration additives (liquid IV) you can add to your water. It doesn't change your water intake but your body absorbs it better and helps keep you from getting dehydrated. So if you are at the lower end of your fluid range or a little shy, the hydration additives will help you from getting dehydrated. Can also do sugar free stuff, like Gatorade zero, or those crystal light drink mixes.

Just keep trying and you will get there. Good luck!

How are you doing with your water I take now?

This is my biggest fear dehydration because I get migraines if I am dehydrated and I am trying to sip on water. I also can't have fake sugar, they too give me migraines.

Thank you.

I have not had any problems with getting in my fluids. I get dehydrated VERY quickly so I was very focused on making the effort. Now (4 months post op) it is natural and basically back to normal.

I can drink normal, large amounts, I would say I even chug. Every once in a blue moon it hits heavy if I chug too fast but the feeling goes away in a minute or 2 so still not an issue.

I average 70oz of WATER a day, plus my daily shake and if I have something else like tea or something.

I don't prefer fake sugar either, but luckily I like unsweet tea and use shakes to flavor decaf coffee now. I am not even much of a coffee drinker. I like the flavor of coffee, so before surgery those sugary coffee drinks, coffee flavored icecream and stuff like that. Now, I just take black coffee with caramel protein drinks and it is just as good to me.

When I first came home from surgery, they gave me a bunch of 1 oz. cups and said I need to get 2/3 drinks out of each cup and work my way up. I would fill them and start a tally to keep track. Each day I made a point to beat yesterdays tally until I hit my goal. It made me focused and made it easy to hit the goal but I was definitely drinking ALL DAY LONG. Maybe try something like that to keep you moving forward, you can also buy the hydration additives I mentioned. I don't know if they have artificial sweeteners though. Also, keep in mind the additives don't allow you to drink less water, it just helps your body absorb the water better.

I average 200oz a day now, PreOpt. I am worried I won’t be able to take enough water in. I work outside and drive a trolley as a tour driver sitting on an engine that is about 114 degree’s then add the humidity and hot scorching Florida sun of 99 - 104 degree weather. I am hoping by the time I go back to work, I will be able to stay hydrated
Try to not drink cold water, room temp is better. I bought a half gallon hydrojug and fill it for work, I’ve been making myself drink it while I am there. Now it’s getting easy.
